help with external links

ok so i downloaded t era template just to get me going fast, i try to put external links in to eg "http://www.google.com"

but when i go to open it, it comes up with an error saying c:\users\joseph\my site\http:\\www.google.com was not found, now i double checked everything i didnt put \\ i put // why is it always over wrighting it,

 

i also tested on a blank html page and the link worked so i copied the code over but the same error came up !!

    Well it looks like the link is pointing to a file on your hard drive.

     

    An important first step when working in Dreamweaver is to define a site.  Did you do that?

    Can you describe in exact detail how you are

    i try to put external links in to eg "http://www.google.com"

    Working in code view? design view? hand coding? copy/paste, etc
