Image Links Breakage

May 12, 2012 5:13 PM

Is there a way to avoid every image link being broken when you move your project files around?

Paths are absolute, instead of relative.

If I move the folder "Poster Brochure_TEMPLATE_CON", along with all files and folders within, and then try and re-open "Poster Brochure_TEMPLATE.ai" the image links are broken.

nope.. no way other than to keep links at the same directory level as the .ai file.

Paths are absolute if links aren't in the same directory as the .ai file. Illustrator looks in the direcotry of the document first... then defaults to the absolute path of the image when it was linked.

99.9% of my files get cooked with a "links" or "images" folder in the enclosing folder, so I completely agree with you.  Relative is the way to go, as long as you are looking within the enclosing folder.  Otherwise, absolute.

I think I put in a feature request for this in 2001.

Adobe rather adds new features than fixing bugs and tackling performance issues.

Also there's no easy way to scale a placed image back to it's original size (also put in as a feature request a long time ago).

Adobe is just an annoying monopoly.
