CS6 Creative Cloud Adobe Application Manager Failure

This was previously asked by another customer, however I believe the discussion was prematurely closed (marked as "answered") without being fully answered for all situations.

Please add my name to the list of people having problems with the new Creative Cloud installer (AdobeApplicationManager). To be clear on the symptoms:

1. Download the AdobeApplicationManager.dmg as prompted by Adobe.

2. Open the DMG

3. Run the AdobeApplicationManager. I have tried this both from within the DMG and from a copy I dragged to the desktop.

4. The dialog box "Initializing Installer" appears. There is not a prompt for granting disk access. Only the progress bar and the quit button.

5. Let it run for an hour -- nothing happens, except a file is created: ~/Library/Logs/AdobeDownload/LBS.log

6. The quit button does not work.

7. To stop the installer, I have to use Force Quit.

The contents of the LBS.log:

I attempted to re-download the DMG -- the Adobe site will not allow this. I think you are going to have to construct a clean up script to allow customers to revert their machines to the state before using the new AdobeApplicationManager. Then you will have to revisit the ApplicationManagerCode, because it is clearly incompatible with some Mac OS X Lion configurations.

Clicking on an application icon in the Creative Cloud applications page will issue an URL of the form "asm://..." however there is no such helper application, and hence nothing happens.

Hello Eric and Anirudh,

This has been resolved in the following way, which differs from the previous solutions.

1. Go to Adobe Downloads, not the Creative Cloud Apps page, but the standalone downloads.

2. Choose any of the applications, preferably a small one.

3. Request a download.

This will cause a fresh clean Adobe Download Assistant to be downloaded.

4. After the application has been downloaded and extracted, do not run it.

5. Immediately shutdown and power down the Mac. Wait about a minute.

I know, this sounds like voodoo, but I am not arguing with success.

6. After restart, open your web browser, log in to the Adobe Creative Cloud Applications page.

5. Click download on one of the subscription applications.

6. A fresh clean Adobe Application Manager will be downloaded, extracted, and run.

7. From the Adobe Application Manager, you can now download any of the Creative Cloud CS6.

Very interesting. I wouldn't expect steps 1-4 to make a difference. My suspicion is that step 5, rebooting the Mac, is what made the difference. There really shouldn't be any interaction whatsoever between the legacy Adobe Download Assistant and the current Adobe Application Manager.

Hello Eric,

This procedure was given to me from an Adobe support person over the phone. Is it possible that running the Adobe Download Assistant put the system in a known state, e.g. cleaning out other copies of either the assistent or manager?

I am more surprised that the full power down is necessary. Sure, that thoroughly cleans out the RAM, but the state pages are still on the disk and are restored on the reboot. But since I tried it both ways, I know a mere restart is not enough -- you have to fully power down.

I followed all the steps and still can't install, rebooted many times too. Adding the asu.trace didn't generate a trace however. Is there some contents that need to be put in that file?

After following a few of these workarounds my AAM just bounces in the dock now. Come on Adobe. Not a great start.

Sorry for the trouble. Please use this cleaner tool to clean Adobe Application Manager from your system: http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html

Then as discussed in that thread, put the asu.trace file and then send me the detailed logs. I would be happy to help.

Just put an empty asu.trace file (note that the extension is .trace). Then send me the logs here:

Hi @kmroberts,

Can you try the following steps and see if it resolves the issue:

1.) From 'Go' Menu invoke 'Go to Folder' and enter '~/Applications'.

2.) Check if 'Adobe' folder is present.

3.) If present, then rename the the folder.

4.) Try installation now.

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, try the following:

1.) Rename 'Adobe Applicaiton Manager' folder at '/Application/Utilities'

2.) Try installation now.
