Edit files directly on server

May 15, 2012 9:47 AM

I have been working with dreamweaver for years now, and I feel that either i'm missing something, or Adobe is missing a very atrractive feature. I think I'll illustrate this through an example.

With Microsift Visual Web Developer, a program which I extremely dislike has an add a site feature. When you do this, you enter all of the FTP information and so on, from here, when you create/open a web document it opens it directly from the server (not from a folder where you have a complete copy of the site on your computer). When I click save (ctrl+S) it saves it directly to the server via FTP. Can I accomplish this in Dreamweaver? I work with PHP files a lot, along with WordPress, and I'd rather make minor CSS changes "on the fly" hit the hotkeys for save, and see the changes without having to select "put" or sync the site.

Thanks for your support

Zach

This seems to be becoming a more popular request.  I think if you want to see this feature you will need to do a feature request.  One possible solution for this would be to have the option to define a site that does not have a local site folder.  For now you can save on upload in the Advanced portion of the Site setup where you define the FTP information, but no option to work only on temporary files.

Only thing to realize is that if this scenario would be true, you would lose the Wordpress code-hinting because in order to do this DW adds a file to your local machine if I am not mistaken.  Plus, the Live View would be pointless since you would need to save the file to see changes and if you save the file it would then go directly to the website defeating the purpose of that as it is currently built.  Just something to think about.

    DW edits files locally.

To save time, you can enable "Automatically upload files to server on Save" in your Site Definitions.

Site > Manage Sites > Edit > Servers > Advanced  (see screenshot)

I personally use WAMP and have installed it multiple times if you wanted to give it another try I could help you out.

I feel your pain. It was a big mistake when they removed this functionality

Has anyone found a work around for non-fusion sites?

You don't have to be running a CF site to elect to use this RDS function.  Just define the site with that selected for the Connect using field....  You will no longer have a local site, since everything is taken from the remote location.

    Murray, here's my dilemma:

I do most of my work on a computer that is locally networked to the server that hosts the files so I do not need FTP or any other out of network access to the files when using this computer.

Sometimes I do need to access the files from my laptop, remotely via FTP.

If I setup the locally networked computer so the server folder is my Dreamweaver local folder and I do not set up a remote server or remote folder, it works and I’m able to search/replace but then when I preview in a browser, it previews using the local path (e.g.; \\server\website\root\) instead of the sites URL so dynamic content does not show. I would like for Dreamweaver to use the URL instead of the path. The only way I can get it to do that is by setting up a remote server and selecting ‘Local/Network’ under the ‘Connect Using:’ settings. Then I specify the same folder as I did for the local site. I guess it’s working but I have gotten write errors before.

If I use my laptop to access remotely, I would like the ability to use the search/replace function but I guess the only way to do that is to have a local site on the laptop?

So please tell me exactly how does RDS differ from FTP?

What do I put in each of the input boxes? The tiles differ from the FTP boxes.

One other thing I've noticed since upgrading to CS6 is that when I perform an "undo" (ctrl-z) I have to hit the F5 key to see the changes even in the code screen. I never had to do this in any of the other versions.

RDS configures your site up so that the LOCAL files are actually taken from the remote site, meaning that you are always editing the live files. Thus, there is no Remote site.  I have never used this configuration in practice, so I don't know what other ramifications might apply.  I have, however, used a local site that is actually on a 'remote', networked computer that has been mapped to a drive on my workstation (U:).  That seems to work fine.  Have you tried that?
