Unite tool causes distortion

When I attempt to Unite this text (converted to outlines) with the rectangle above it - the objects are distorted. The top image is before uniting the object, the bottom is after. I can not figure out why this is happening - any suggestions? (I am using CS5) Thank you!

That is strange. Look at your Appearnce window to see if you have any rounded corners in the element. If so, just trash it...

Is "Align to pixel grid" off?

Gotta be the Rounded Corners effect applied somewhere.

Before adjoining the outlined text and the rectangle, select them and hit D, on your keyboard. Then, instead of Unite, try Merge.
