Help drawing an O with see through center

I'm trying to draw the letter O with a shadow effect behind it. Because I've used two elipse shapes to create my O, I'm unable to see through the middle of the O to the shadow effect that would naturally be visible behind it. How do I cut out the space in the middle of the O or draw the shape so that the middle is entirely transparent and the shadows behind it are visible?

    chaselloyd,

You may select both ellipses and Object>Compound Path>Make.

It works both before and after you apply the shadow.
