I am not able to move layers around on my layout once I have selected them. What could be wrong?

Is there a little padlock icon on the layer?  If so toggle it off as per the image below.  Layer locks can be very useful - especially the Transparent pixels (first icon) and the crossed arrows icon that will lock the position of a layer.

Are you sure you are using the Move tool? First tool in the tools panel?

Is your problem moving a layer from one document to another by dragging from the canvas or you also can't move the layer at all in its own document?

I'm not sure why you can't move it without having your file, but if your layer is not larger than the window, try this workaround, select all (Ctrl + A) and press Ctrl + J. this will create a copy of the pixels on a new layer. Hide or delete the original layer. Try moving the new layer.

Have you installed all the lion updates and photoshop updates?

    Reset the photoshop preferences?

See if anything in this thread helps:

dhc, I applaud you for your level headed responses to what might sound obvious questions.  If only all posters we so able to resist the urge to take offense!

Sorry, but I take a step back when I discover Apple Macs are involved.  There be monsters there

    Dhc-

Are you trying to drag the layer icon from the Layer Panel to a tabbed window?

Try dragging from the image area. For some reason, not yet fixed in cs6, Adobe won't let you drag from layer panel into a tabbed document. Frustrating.

Do you have any Layers or Adjustment layer above the Layer you want to move? Auto Select might be targeting one of those instead.
