I want to upgrade from Photoshop Elements 4 to Elements 10. Will Photoshop Elements 10 automatically import my photo catalogue from Elements 4 including all the tags? If not can this be done manually?
I have a slight variation to this, my Elements 4 was on an XP PC which has failed totally. I have a replacement Win 7 PC on which Elements 4 appears not to want to load. Having sought "chat support" advice I was told I could restore my Elements 4 backup into Elements 10. Having purchased an Elements 10 Upgrade I checked with chat support again to confirm the process and was then told it wasn't possible to convert Elements 4 directly to Elements 10 without going via Elements 6 ?!
As I have a full Elements 4 backup on an external hard drive and have an XP laptop I guess I could recover my Elements 4 backup to the XP laptop and export this to the hard drive IF Elements 10 will actually convert this as the previous post implies (contrary to tech chat advise).
Alternativelly is there any way I can hold of a "trial" version of ELements 6 to perform the intermediate conversion ?
I think you should be able to restore a PSE4 catalog directly from PSE10, as indicated in that technical paper:
http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/common-catalog-issues-upg rade-elements.html
I have no longer PSE4 installed, but I restored successfully PSE5 and PSE6 catalogs int PSE10 on a Win7 PC.
Maybe there is another problem, but I really doubt that converting through PSE6 is a solution.
Sorry for delay, got bogged down trying to get the laptop restore to work which was a waste of time because it's hard disc was too small !
As suggested by dj the restore from my PSE4 backup appeared to work and on completion it went into an automatic conversion and also said it had converted successfully. However it gave the message :-
"The catalog named My Catalog.psa has been converted for use with this version of Elements Organizer and the original catalog has been renamed to "d:\xxxxx\My Pictures\My Catalog.psa 1"
On closing this message window I get thumbnails created for a catalog shown as My Catalog 1, which the above message implies is is the unconverted catalog ?
If I open My Catalog it says "No items have been imported to this catalog" !?
So is something wrong or is he conversion message misleading ?
I have an additional problem in that the drive letter on my new PC is different to the original was single drive, new has 2 drives). So for the restore I specified "New Location", pointed at the My Pictures folder under which I wanted the photos. I also requested "Preserve original file structure". This seems to result in the full path from the original PC including "Documents and Settings\User\My Pictures\...." etc beneath the My Pictures which is very cumbersome ! I did try without the "Preserve original ..." but while this didn't create the unwanted additional folder levels it also removed the required folder structure within My Pictures (not surprising really I suppose !).
Is there a "easy" way of moving the folder structure around or would it have to be done for each tagged level ?
Think we're making progress though !
If a catalog works in PSE10, and shows you the thumbnails and tags and everything, then it is the converted catalog!

Please state clearly the desired result so we can figure out how to get you there.
In PSE10, you would go to Folder Location View, and select the folder D:\Trevor\My Pictures\Documents and Settings\Trevor\My Documents\My Pictures and then drag to to d:\trevor
WARNING: There is a bug that could affect this process, which affects some users and not others. After such a move, the photos appear to be in the wrong folder in PSE, even though in your operating system the photos are in the proper folder, so you may not want to do this. Of course, if you still have your PSE4 backup, you can always get back to where you are now.
