I would prefer to be accurate in my findings than to be emotionally frustrated.
I continue to have problems, and yesterday spent two hours with tech support .. nearly "teaching" your 'Call Center' about video editing and what happens.
I am beyond disgusted: Why cant I capture a VHS tape and stabilize it in the highest quality possible?
The Capture in PP doesn't work. The audio wont sync with the video in PP. The Stabilization "Out of Memory Error" is not appropriately defined ( Is says my scrach disk is full .. and it is not ) and after three 12 hour attempts at someone's "Mother's Day Present" for their son that passed away 8 years ago I still have nothing.
Q1: Why is Capture "Auto-Disconnecting" even when the settings seem to be set otherwize?
>capture a VHS tape
With the very little information you provide, all I can say is that VHS is analog and you must convert to digital to be able to edit
That conversion process is not done by any version of Premiere... digitizing hardware is required
For example... Old forum discussion, message now gone, but here's the summary
.
Matt with Grass Valley Canopus in their tech support department stated that the model 110 will suffice for most hobbyist. If a person has a lot of tapes that were played often the tape stretches and the magnetic coding diminishes. If your goal is to encode tapes in good shape buy the 110, if you will be encoding old tapes of poor quality buy the model 300
.
Both the 110 and 300 are two way devices so you may output back to tape... if you don't need that, look at the model 55
.

http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc110 for good tapes, or
http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc300 better with OLD tapes
I posted in the PP Forum .. but I been warned that my posts have been unfocused .. so I am venting here.
Thank John and Jim:
I have a Formac Firewire with a 400 to 800 DV cable coneected to my 12 Core Mac Pro.
The "Capture" mode in PP 5.5 keeps dropping the recording no matter what I do.
I have yet to segment the orignial for stabilization in AE ... since I am trying to get a better quality VHS transfer first.
The USB EasyCap gave a poor transfer compared to some Quicktime Firewire DV samples with the Formac I borrowed.
Quicktime also drops the recording ( 7 ) .. and while trying to find a alternate app .. my whole system went down.
Now I am reinstallig Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 .. and then possible Adobe Master Suite 5.5 again.
I could go on .. I dont know where even to start.
Cont ..
John .. after my research ... it is key that the device does not incurr a 'break' during a tape that registers some type of recognizable trigger that causes both Quicktime and "Capture" in Adobe PP to stop the recording. Software should alone let this issue pass .. but no one in either complany has the insight to fix this.
There are countlless tape I have to transfer .. and that this is a problem .. and Mac Specific .. and an issue on Adobe's part as well .. I find it disheartening that my investment and over a year with several problems related to video production has not been fixed.
If i knew specifically that the Canopus 300 solves this problem I would send for one today.
Whats another $299 when I am over $7000 into it with an unusable system.
Other than the links I provided, I really can't help with Mac problems
Over on the Windows side there are at least two other programs to use for DV capture... I think they are free, but have not used them myself
I have NO idea what single purpose program you might use with a Mac that might capture DV better than Premiere

What is the VHS device that you are capturing from?
Where does "Formac" fit into the capture workflow? ie what is it?
From what I observe ...you seem to have an inordinate (or unlucky) amount of problems with your NLE and system. Does it meet (Adobe) minimum system requirements and what is your experience and knowledge of NLE software?
I have a 12 Core 2.9 GHZ with 32 GB RAM and a RAID 0 / 1212 Areca / NVIDIA GTX 285.
The Formac is a Firewire 400 conversion device. I use a 400 to 800 cable.
Video quality of the Formac is unsurpassed compared to a USB EasyCap device I also used.
The app EvoLV .. which I use to broadcast live HTTP Streaming also records ... and when using either video input device .. have no problem keeping the recording active.
The USB Device EasyCap also has no problem with scence breaks.
It is only the "Firewire" input devices that choke on VHS irregularities.
Do you know what a problem this is? Nearly all VHS tapes that are home recorded have such issues .. and both Apple and Adobe seems to evade correcting it.
Look at the G devices here http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc_g_series which claim to work with less than good source tapes with a "frame synchronizer"
Google found http://www.formac.com/webapp/products_av_studiodeluxe_specs.php which says it has software for capture... so is this what you have, and why are you not using their software that is designed for their device?
Im not sure if it has TBC ... It is a Formac DV .. ( Hard to find )
I found a app called Vidi that works perfectly. It has also been updated for Lion.
Vidi solves everyones problem of Adobe / Quicktime for poor / bad VHS tape transfers .. dropping the recording.
Vidi will record the whole thing straight through.
Although my audio input is bad on the Formac .. I was able to link it later from recording Quicktime audio and Vidi video at the same time .. joining both in PP afterwards.
Vidi also has many settings .. and can save the video in best quality.

Formac DV Firewire Video Converter. S-Video / Composite in - out .... Firewire 400 .. Its an older model.
Why I can use the app "Vidi" and it works fine .. and not Quicktime or Adobe PP : Capture is beyond me.
I thought the problem was software related .. and I was right.
Again ... if "Vidi" http://mitzpettel.com/ ( and thanks to Mitz and the Source Code Here: https://github.com/mitzpettel/Vidi ) work great for other Firewire devices ( unknown )
it is a fix for an outstanding problem with Quictime and Adobe Premiere that has been going on for years.
Pharther we still do a lot of transfer of old cine , vhs, 8mm etc....... I founded that you are able to get many of the older machines at pawn shops(not porn shop lolol) or on ebay very cheap, still in very good working order. Panasonic make a Svh-s NV-HS 1000 unit that includes TBC and the older panasonic minidv g11 to 15 act as a dv bridge , the result are very good. Also Canopus uints which was mentioned ealier are good. hope this helps.
Maybe its time to let go Mac and come to the Dark Side............
we have cookies...........very big chocolate chip ones......... ![]()
Thanks Anthony ... I do Telecine too .. built one on the GAF platform and used a photosenor insead of the rolling momentary dip switch. Got a nice big lense from Anchor too for a good price! ![]()
The Formac is a nice unit. The Adobe "Capture" autostopping the recording issue seems to be solved. ( Not by Adobe or Apple .. but by using a 3rd party app called "Vidi". )
I am now attempting to "Warp Stabilize" a large file ( I was told to segment it ) one last time.
My RAID is disconnected .. since there is a sersious bug in the Areca 1212 RAID PCI Driver that freezes the whole system.
I am using a 12 Core 2.93 GHZ with 32 GB RAAM and a NVidia GTX 285.
Mac OS X 10.7.4
Adobe Master Suite 5.5
The Apple "Console" app logs a whole lot of these three Adobe related errors:
1. 5/18/12 2:10:16.260 AM aeselflink: CFURLCreateWithString was passed this invalid URL string: '/System/Library/Frameworks/System.framework' (a file system path instead of an URL string). The URL created will not work with most file URL functions. CFURLCreateWithFileSystemPath or CFURLCreateWithFileSystemPathRelativeToBase should be used instead.
2.) 5/18/12 2:10:16.331 AM aeselflink: -[NSMenu menuID]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1183100e0

3.) 5/18/12 2:11:18.596 AM [0x0-0x9b09b].com.adobe.aerendercore: You have at least one output module template that refers to a missing output plug-in. Please check your Output Module Templates.
I am questioning if the above errors cause slower file performance during rendering / analyzing.
Question:
What RAID card are you using?
Do you use the Warp Stabilizer?
Do you have similar errors in your Apple "Console" ( utilities )
That cine system my give you a very good picture with that lens
, As for Mac well we went with Canopus, PC Base system, We have never looked back , after the problem we had with Avid and Mac
.
For cine flim capturing side we use a canopus Edius Pro, usesing Canopus Lossless codec to capture in. For vhs, 8mm , Svhs and Hi8mm, we also do capture via Canopus DVstorm 2 card .
I have doing some reseach in to direct coping to DSLR http://blog.wanken.com/8338/convert-8mm-film-with-the-canon-5d-mark-ii / this may interest you.
What RAID card are you using?
As for Raid, on the older system where we do Analog work it runs raid , My other PC runs without raid and edit with CS5 and GV Edius Pro 6.06 which is similar spec to your Mac, we also have a New I5 sandybridge NLE which runs CS5.5 and Edius 6.06. no raid.
Do you use the Warp Stabilizer? I use Edius version called ProDAD's Mercalli V2 image stabilization , but in very few case we need any stablizing as the SVHS machine has a TBC bliuded in, also we have a old Vidonics digital mixer with TBC biuld in which does the work very well.
Do you have similar errors in your Apple "Console" ( utilities ) I cannot help you there as I use Windows 7Pro 64bit.
Good Luck hope you resolve your problems.
