Is Photoshop CS6 using up all my memory?

I have been using Photoshop CS6 for about a week. After using it for a few days, it becomes super slow and I have to reboot my computer to correct the problem. This is the second time my PC has gotten bogged down since I installe CS6. When I check Windows Task Manager, it looks like all my memory is being used. Below is my system info (it is a 3 month old 27" imac running Windows 7 64-bit - bootcamp). I had no problems with CS5, and I have not been doing anything too complex since I got CS6, just croping and resizing photos for a website.

    Photoshop normally uses RAM up to the amount you allot it in the Preferences - Performance panel, and it's normal for it to "hold onto" the memory once you've been running it a little while.  But you shouldn't have to reboot your system - just exit Photoshop to free the memory it has allocated to itself.  Are you saying that without Photoshop running you're seeing the system's RAM used up?

     

    If so, look in Task Manager's Processes tab to see what process(es) has/have the memory allocated.  You can sort the column by clicking on the column heading.

     

    If not (i.e., the RAM is all freed when you close Photoshop), and it's really the Photoshop executable that's got the RAM allocated, and if you're regularly running into situations where you need Photoshop and other things that together take more RAM than you have, maybe you should consider buying more RAM.  It's not hugely expensive nowadays.  I admit I don't know how upgradable an iMac is.

    Anything allocated by Photoshop would be freed when you quit Photoshop.

    If things don't clear up until you reboot, that means that there is a system or driver level problem (and you really do need to update your video card driver).

    If you can upgrade using the ATI Catalyst package, don't get the very latest.  Seek out Catalyst version 12.2 on their web site.

    Thanks for the replies. I am downloading Catalyst 12.2 now and will see if that fixes the problem. The memory does not get released when I quit Photoshop, and when I check Task Manager it does not appear that any application is holding onto the 4-5GB memory that has been used up. For these reasons, I suspect the driver is the issue or at least the manner in which Photoshop CS6 interacts with the driver. I will report back after a week and let you know if the driver update fixes the problem.

    OK, then you are definitely looking at an OS or driver level problem.

     

    It could be the video card driver, but it could just as easily be any other driver as well.
