Illustrator CS6 crashing after install

May 18, 2012 2:21 PM

I recently upgraded to creative cloud, installed photoshop, fireworks, and illustrator. All apps work fine except for Illustrator. It gets to the start up screen, opens the application chrome, then crashes.

I have removed my version of CS4 entirely, restarted, used the Adobe CS Cleaner app, restarted, and reinstalled Illustrator by itself. I went through this process twice, the second time disabling adobe fonts (just reaching but thought they may have something to do with the issue). Same problem persists.

Below are the log errors from my console after starting Illustrator. I am on OSX Lion.

5/18/12 3:16:08.271 PM Adobe Illustrator: CFURLCreateWithString was passed this invalid URL string: '/System/Library/Frameworks/' (a file system path instead of an URL string). The URL created will not work with most file URL functions. CFURLCreateWithFileSystemPath or CFURLCreateWithFileSystemPathRelativeToBase should be used instead.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Me too. Driving me nuts. Tried fixing permissions, removing fonts etc.

Also any helkp here would help. Other CS6 apps seem fine.

Illustrator CS6 will launch OK if I set a new user account. So there is clearly something amis in my main admin user account

Shot in the dark, but have you repaired permissions since installing?  Also - did you move anything after installing? (is the app still located where it was installed in your applications folder?)

Look for the com.adobe.illustrator.plist when you find quit Illustrator and trash it.

Repair your permissions before trying to Launch Illustrator.

Hi Wade, I have already tried that, for good measure I did it again, but same result. Crash on launch. Jesse. Permissions repaired since install, yes. Nothing moved, everything is in default locations.

Further testing reveals that If I reboot Lion in safe mode (Shift key held down) Illustrator will launch. Now its a process of eleimination to see which login-item, extension is causing the conflict.

    That is half the battle.

    Here are two thoughts

    1. the permissions on the settings folder is corrupt and need to be changed and be changed manually, Control or right click on your Adobe Illustrator CS 6 Settings folder in's in the preferences folder.

Then go to get info and make the permissions read write for all listed users and have that option apllied to all items inside the folder, it all done with the Get Info under sharing and permissions.

    2. You have font corruprion and or a font cache problem you have to clewan the font cache out and find the font causing the bloat.

    adn one more

did you trash the com.adobe.illustrator.plist? If not do so I think that is actually the problem. Or it too has to have the permissions repaired manually.

Do you have Suitcase installed? Tell us about some of the types of apps you normally run in a day icluding any small utilities apps?

Chad. When you created your new user. Did you have any other addtional software running? start-up items, pref-panes or extensions? Illustrator runs for me if I restart with shift key held down - so at the moment I'm concluding it's one of my system extensions/start-up items.

Or Corrupt font. That is still a possibility.

As far as I can tell I've checked for font corruption. Remove, hidden or disabled all fonts other than system fonts, which I've validated in fontbook.

    You're welcome!

A note a lot of people will come here and tell us that why is Illustrator so sensitive about fonts when ID or other programs open use them just fine.

The problem is that the corruption over use does not get diminished but simplydevelops further and then one day hey I can't open all my old files and that goes for all the apps that use those fonts.

So it is important that Illustrator ltells you hey I am not going to do this, this font stinks and I do not even have to use it to know just loading them is enough.

So this could saave you in the future.

It would be great if Illustrator could actually point to the font(s) it thinks stinks but as it is it cannot.

Hey, this was extremely helpful, thanks for suggesting the fonts. I just purchased CS6 and couldn't even get Ai to open. So after deactivating all my fonts (I use Linotype FontExplorer X.) Ai finally opened, but now I'm stuck with no fonts.

Any suggestions on how to sort through and find the corrupt fonts? Otherwise I think I'm flying blind sifting through 1200 fonts trying to figure out which ones work, even then I'm not sure I know how to determine what works and what doesn't.

But how do you tell which one is the culprit if you are activating blocks of fonts at a time? Does it tell you which one is corrupt when you click activate? Thanks, sorry to be nit picky.

You activate one half your fonts and try AI. If it works, then activate another 1/2 of the remaining untested fonts and try AI again. If it works, repeat; if not the problem font is among in your second group.

Awesome, thanks for explaining that. Will try it and hopefully find that pesky font! Cheers!

I am encountering the same problem as the op, but neither of the solutions provided here works. I have even used the Adobe CS6 Cleaning Program and reinstalled my CS6 but it does not seem to help anything. Whenever I launch Ai it just freezes on startup, even with the launchAI.command provided (http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/unable-set-maximum-number-files1 .html) does not help.

    Any suggestions?
