It appears you have the CS4 icon rather than the CS6 icon selected. THe CS6 icon has a dark blue background with light blue letters, which is differenct that other versons.
I assume you are using 64 bit program on Win7 machine.
If so open windows explorer and click on C:>proram files>adobe>adobe photoshopCS6(64bit). Scoll down list until PS icon followed by Photoshop. Right click and create shortcut on deskdop.
If using mac same precedure, different file struicture.
The versions are seperate and should not interact with each other.
If you click on a CS6 icon and it starts CS4 you have some serious problems as this should not happen.
Now it is possible to click on an image in CS6 Bridge and have open in CS4 photoshop becasue of file type issues. But I do not read your post as having this problem.
Deleting an old version after install and new version can cause problems with file associations.
not selecting from the pinned icons am on trial version
With Trial you mean the beta version or did you download the new trial?
The beta likely has been shut down (thought it would be somewhere in may?) due to appearing of public version of CS6.
And can you provide more details about what system and version you are using?
Maybe also tell what files you want to open en how you try to open them?
