"qualifying product" error when downloading/installing cs6 and trying to enter serial number

When i download PS CS6 and try to enter my serial number i get:  "Serial Number you provided is valid, but a qualifying product could not be found on this computer".  Just plain CS6 isn't available in the drop down. CS6 extended is available but i don't want that nor do i have a serial number for that.  What is the appropriate action?

    It appears you have purchased the upgrade to Creative Suite 6.  What Adobe product are you upgrading from?  Have you tried entering it's serial number when the installer is requesting the serial number for your qualifying product?

    Thanks. That was my mistake. I didn't understand the software was asking for my prior version's serial number.  You're very helpful.

    Hi, I had CS3 and just bought the CS6 upgrade but can't find my previous serial number. What should I do? Thanks in advance.

    this is quite confusing in the installer. I got stuck and it took me quite a while to figure it out.

    Not clear what is meant by "qualifying product" -- rewording would help a lot of people

    Something like

     

    THis serial number is for an UPGRADE to a prior version of Creative Suite.

    You need to provide the serial number of the PRIOR copy (version 5.5 or earlier)

    Please select which product below you are upgrading FROM and provide the serial number from the version you are upgrading FROM
