Why is the audio not working in Prelude or Bridge with .MTS files?

May 26, 2012 10:11 AM

There is clearly something buggy with Prelude and Bridge (CS6)  on .mts files. I changed one test file from .mts to m2ts and ithe audio works. This however is not a easy workaround since I have thousands of .mts files.  Any thoughts, suggestions, updates?  thanks

    Hi,

When you say audio is not working in Prelude, is this in the Ingest Dialog only or also after you ingest and open the clip from the Project Panel?

Also, are these MTS files on the camera or at least still in the same folder structure as they were created in the camera?

    Thanks,

    Michael

We are looking into the problelm reported by others where AVCHD audio doesn't play in the ingest dialog (when a clip is selected and played).  Not being able to set markers is usually indicative of the MTS files not being in their original folder structure.

While Prelude cannot log raw MTS files you can ingest and transcode them to a format that can be logged.  You can create your own preset in Adobe Media Encoder then select that preset in the Prelude Ingest Dialog.

I've found that I don't get audio playback of AVCHD .MTS files in Premiere (CS5, CS5.5, CS6) nor in Prelude (CS6) until they've been "conformed." This takes quite a while, but there's usually a tiny progress bar you might notice in the bottom right. I haven't tried to play back in an import dialog, but the conforming doesn't happen until a clip is imported to Premiere or "ingested" into Prelude.

(Had me pretty scared at first, because the main reason we bought these fancy new cameras was we'd been having trouble with audio feeds from the conference hotel...)

I haven't tried changing the extension. I had been using the command line to merge the separate files under CS5, 5.5 (Windows, copy /b 000001.MTS + 000002.MTS merged.MTS ; Mac users should be able to do something like cat 000001.MTS 00002.MTS > merged.MTS) but am just now trying Prelude for the first time. (I'm not sure it offers much for a one-person operation where clips are used only once.)

I don't know if you need and answer anymore.  But I had the same problem with premiere.  I have tried to duplicate the conditions but now it alwasy works.

After trying awhile and opening and closing CS6 I noticed that when  you start a new project.  Above the Name you enter,  It says capture format and it was set to DV.  I clicked on it and there was the option HDV.

Since my footage is HD I chose that and when I dragged and dropped my file there was sound attached,

Another time it happened,  So I took a look at the 2nd screen that comes up that I usually hit cancel on.  And saw the AVchd Folder Icon.

    2nd Screen.JPG

    I clicked on it

    Open AVCHD.JPG

And I picked the format I would use.  For Me it was 1080p 24

I clicked okay.  There was a sequence indicator in the source files but I ignored that and dragged and dropped my file into the project box.   I got video and sound that way,  Now for whatever reason.  I don't have to do any of those things for the file to have sound,

I think they mention it here but there is another post that says to be able to use markers on MTS files you need to either copy the file directly from the source or copy the entire AVCHD directory in what ever file you store videos,

That means keeping your SD card or Camera Hard drive clean so you don't import the same clips over and over.

I have been playing with Prelude but I am not sure if I as a one man show doing simple little movies need it.

Speedgrade looks more useful and I am learning that,

I don't know if this is helpful or too late to be helpful but I just figured it out recently.

I have the same issue as well.  I use MTS files (AVCHD format) from a Sony NX Cam and a cannon consumer level HD Camcorder and the audio is either not there or intermittant in Prelude's ingest screen.

The way I read the above posting is that I would have to transcode these to another format and then use Prelude to ingest them.  Is that true? I hope not.  I rarely ingest files with the original folder structure intact.  Is there a reason to have the original folder structure intact?

Any help is appreciated as Prelude's main feature is essentially worthless to me because of this and the screen refresh issue mentioned in here.   http://adobe.hosted.jivesoftware.com/message/5059492#5059492

After a little more searching I found the link regarding Prelude and MTS files and how the folder structure needs to be intact.  Not having the folder structure I took a few files and transcoded them to MP4's hoping this would resolve the audio and screen refresh issue.  It has not.

The screen refresh issue seems to only happen intermittantly and not as frequently as before.  The audio issue is not resolved. I was happily working in the ingest screen, clicked the ingest button, screen went away, I did something else, came back to the ingest screen for another file and now no audio on the MP4's.  I bounced between MP4's and the MTS files and audio will work on the MTS, but not on the MP4.  Shutting down Prelude and then starting it up again, no audio is heard on either file type.  I even found two file types in the same folder (AVI and MP4) and the AVI has sound but the MP4 does not and I can go back and forth between the files with no sound in the MP4 and sound in the AVI file.

How does this happen? These "features" is making this program useless and I can't seem to find a single reason for any of it because nothing is consistent enough, other than the audio not working more than it works.

Boy Do I understand frustration.   While I Finally had prelude figured out by trancoding or whatever or using an MP4 file or being able to put in my SD card and either ingest from there or copy it onto my hard drive.   I decided that I currently don't need prelude.

My frustration now is my desktop which has become weird and I am going to have re download the programs,

This is a shot in the dark.  But MP4 files come in different sizes and formats.  I export files pick H.264 and then choose from the dropdown menu of Premiere what quality.  It could be for You tube or for HDTV 1080P.

Perhaps it needs a high quality MP4.   Whatever, it is certainly finicky, When I am able to get my Prelude working again I can experiment and tell you what I came up with.

But I guess the only thing for the future is to ingest from the source.

    Sorry about the problems

    Hey

I finally got my computer and Creative Cloud CS6 problems sorted out.  I downloaded Prelude and then downloaded updates.

But I was able to ingest with sound. MP4 files of various qualties and MTS files that were not from the source.   Everything works,

Do you have an up to date version,  not that other versions should behave like yours.

But I wanted to let you know I tried to make it not work but everything did.

    Sorry

The adobe app manager says everything is up to date except the desktop tools.  Prelude version is 1.0.3 (001 (MC:218798))

Not sure if that helps or not.

    Hi Scott,

I have the exact same version.  And speaking of ingesting MTS files from the source.   I recorded some footage.  Put the SD card in my laptop.  Transferred the one file onto a flash drive, put the flash drive into my editing computer and transferred it onto my Hard Drive and went through the ingest process and it came out perfect sound and everything.    I was going to make a screen recording of what I did, but you know how to do it. I just doesn't work right.

I imagine you have the right hardware.

So my little my mind can't think of what to do.   I am having a frustrating problem with my wireless printer,  One computer can print to it and one can't.

All I can say is that I used the Chat Tech Support when first installing Creative Cloud and they were very helpful, patient and easy to deal with,.

There are slower wait time for chat support, that is why I mention them.

Good luck and if I can do anything or test out something on mine, I am glad to help.

I unfortunately work alone and I don't see the need to use Prelude.  I just edit the clips in Premiere

Here's what I have learned on this issue: Prelude needs to "conform" the AVCHD audio in order to play it back, and this conform happens after clips have been ingested and opened in Prelude or Premiere Pro. If a clip has previously been conformed you will be able to hear its audio in the ingest dialog since the conformed audio file is available to be played.

We understand this is not the solution to the problem of not being able to preview the sound of AVCHD clips in the ingest dialog and have this enhancement on our backlog.

Glad you are working on it.

I am not sure what you mean by conformed.   But it's weird that I can ingest AVCHD files into Prelude from whatever source.  And  other formats as well.  And Scott has trouble with all kinds of formats,  But we have the same version.

I have no idea what I did correctly except download it and update it.

Perhaps my computer is haunted by an Adobe tech.

    All the best

Well, I have a theory why my AVCHD files are ingested.  I just noticed the icon that appears just before the image does, says M2TS.  Mayby the 2 signifies a slightlt different type.

If this is the case then a simple "conforming" icon, a splash screen indicating conforming is occuring or some other indicator in the ingest screen would suffice.  I think the "not knowing" is part of the problem because the end user wants the software to "just work."

If this same problem, that is conforming, affects or is related to the screen refresh issue, that is a much larger issue that should addressed quickly.

    Mr. Plate,

Is there a differrence between MTS files and M2TS files?   Would that be the reason I have no problem ingesting my clips.

    Bar,

I don't know what the difference is between MTS and M2TS, from what I've read they're both possible extensions for the files in AVCHD.  The way I understand Scott's posts is not that he cannot ingest at all, but when his ingest dialog is open a) he cannot hear the audio when previewing clips and b) his ingest dialog refreshes while he's trying to set up partial ingests, resetting the In and Out marks. Scott, is this right? Are you able to ingest all of your clips without transcoding and have the audio conform and play after ingest?

    Thanks.

    Wes,

I can ingest the files, have prelude transcode them and move them to other locations and the videos work just fine afterwards.  Those functions within prelude work.

The issues I have, listed below, are specific to the ingest screen:

    - within the ingest screen I do not have any audio on the MTS files (more detail to follow)

    - screen refreshes whenever I click to another video causing all in/out points to be lost on all files.

To be honest, I have not even got past the ingest screen and onto other features because of the screen refresh issue. I just gave up.

On the first issue I just tried using prelude to ingest some MTS files and I watched the Resource monitor to see which files it accessed so I could have an idea as to what Prelude might be doing.  Within prelude, upon opening the directory with the files in it, Prelude did an initial read of all the files in the directory and then stopped.  I did not see any further access by prelude to any of the files except when I hover scrubbed or played the video.  At no time was there any audio on any of the MTS files. Given this I do not think conforming actually happened.

Also, using prelude, I have transcoded MTS files to H.264 (MP4) files and I still had audio outside of Prelude.  The transcoded files play fine in Premier Pro, After Effects, Windows media player and quicktime. Taking a file, transcoding and then "ingetsing" via prelude again (i.e. MTS --> MP4 --> clipped MP4), the transcoded MP4 (unclipped) does not have audio in the ingest screen. However these files play just fine in all other applications.   Within preludes ingest screen I have heard audio a few times with MP4s and MTS files, but it is not often and very inconsistent.  More often than not I get no audio when using the ingest function.

On the second item, I can reproduce this at any time.  All I need to do is click on one movie to bring up the yellow timeline bar, play the movie and then click on another video and the screen refreshes.  This action is 100% consistent within my system.  This issue is a separate thread so if it needs to be moved or addressed separately just let me know.

Thanks, Scott, for the followup.  Clips displayed in the ingest dialog are not conformed until they are ingested into Prelude and opened on the timeline, so formats that require conforming won't be able to preview audio in the ingest dialog (unless they were previously conformed).

The second item is being investigated by our team. If it is ok I will have them connect with you directly since you can reproduce it on demand and we have not yet been able to reproduce the issue. I really want to get this addressed for you so that you can start using Prelude. :-)
