Low quality Program Monitor viewing and 5px black bar on bottom of video.

Apr 2, 2012 10:44 PM

I have 2 systems I edit on

Home

PC (i7 + 12gb ram + 2 x SSD and GTX460)

Work

Mac ( 2 x Quad core (8 core?), 12gb ram , velociraptor, GT120)

On my home pc when I take 1920x1080 clip from a 7D/5D and drop it in a 400 x 600 program/sequence frame (web output) its sharp and perfect without a black bar on the bottom.

On my Mac at work when I do the exact same thing I get a blurry preview and playback with a 5px black bar on the bottom of the frame on the program monitor but a sharp image on the source monitor/file.

Source file and sequence settings are both square pixels on PC and Mac. I preview at full resolution on playback and pause on both machines.

My questions are:

Where can that black bar come from if its not aspect ratio the source file is larger than the sequence? It is not a letterbox. Just 5px of black on the bottom no matter where I drag the image.

Could the video card on the Mac be causing low quality previews? As during export the sharpness comes back. It is very difficult to edit when its not WYSIWYG

Thanks in advance!

(also posted on Cinema5D but its driving me nuts thats why I am posting here also)

Not sure on the black bar part but do you have your playback set to Full on both machines ?

I'm having the exact same problem osx86 computer with Premiere CS6.

My original footage is 1920x1080 and I'm dropping it in to a 1920x822 (2.33) sequence.

I've been playing around with my sequence settings, but without any luck so far. Sometimes all of a sudden it seems to be gone, but then without changing anything a few seconds later it's back again.

It doesn't seem to be exported that way though. I ran a little test and that looks just find.

It's just incredibly annoying since while editing, during playback, especially when using transitions the image tends to jump up and down (or stretch out rather).

Setting Max Render Quality and/or Max bit depth don't seem to help for me ...

If anyone has any ideas, that would be very much appreciated!

    Thanks!

Don't do that.  Edit in a sequence that matches the footage, then set the desired resolution during export.

So you would suggest working with a mask rather than a sequence sized to what you'd need in the end?

In fact I used to do it this way. But it seemed just so much more logical to just input the desired ratio for your sequence, rather than be putting black bars on there and losing quite a bit of screen real estate ...

    thx Jim!

No.  I suggest working in a sequence that matches your media, then setting the output to the desired resolution.  No mask is required.

Well, I see how in general it would be desired to match your sequence to your footage. But for this particular project I want a 2.33 ratio. If I would just work with a 16:9 sequence I would'nt be able to know what exactly would be in the final picture. Unless I put a mask on top of my entire timeline of course ...

I'll try setting Max Render Quality and/or Max bit depth upon creating a new sequence. Although I'm quite worried about the render times this will give me while working on the project ... Thanks!

I'm afraid that didn't work either. Guess I'm back to a 1920x1080 sequence with the letterbox on top as a png ...

    Thanks!

OT, you can make a custom letterbox in the titler and save it a a template.
