Bridge CS 5.1 too slow to be usable

May 26, 2012 9:56 AM

Hi everyone,

I'm on a Mac Book Pro (2.8 GHz Intel Core Duo + 4 GB DDR3) and when I upgraded from CS5 to CS5.5, I realized that my new Bridge (5.1) was really full of issues... I click on buttons, and nothing happen (then 2 minutes later, it finally happens). The interface itself starts to get messy if I try to re-organize my windows... Like a graphic card issue, except my Mac works damn well with every other softwares.

So for a while, I just kept using the previous Bridge version that was still on my computer...

But recently, I changed my hard drive for a SSD and I re-installed all my softwares...

So now, I only have Bridge 5.1... And again, it is completly un-usable, even after this fresh new instal...

I may go to CS6 very soon... But in the mean time, I'd like this software to work... Any idea of what is going on?

It is more likely some software or hardware issue on you computer than Bridge, otherwise there would be thousands screaming.

The most likely culprit is scurity software.  Temporially disable your virus scanning software, and see if that helps.  Some software scans every command and slows things down.

An other option might be you have to less free space left on your SSD. Can you specify a bit more about that. SSD is still very expensive, especially large storage.

For a good functioning of normal HD the rule is to have at least 10 % free space left, don't know about SSD but can't imagine it would be much different.

And have you also tried a reset of preferences (restart Bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences). And maybe a manual trash of the central cache file might help you also to start again with fresh cache file.

Depending on amount and file size bridge needs time for first round caching but after that it should run fast enough. CS6 will be a bit faster again because it is 64 bit but CS4, 5 and 5.5 are certainly good usable also.

I'm not sure to understand if I can or cannot update graphic card drivers for Mac... Usualy the only upgrades I need are coming from Apple, and my Snow Leopard is fully up to date...

There are indeed no driver updates for a Mac, they all come with the system update and since you state to have the latest Snow Leopard (10.6.8) your drivers are all up to date.

I checked a bit using the MacTracker App and it might be you have the MacBook pro 15 inch Late 2008?

The info indeed shows two graphic cards, one with 256 MB VRAM and one with 512 MB, The minimum required for Bridge is 512 MB VRAM so assuming the biggest VRAM card is used for main system you should be OK.

I still would prefer to first quit Bridge and dump the central cache file manually (user library/caches/Adobe/ Bridge CS5.1/ inhere grab the folder called 'Cache' and drag it to the trash. Then restart Bridge and try again.
