Moving LR4 from one PC to another. Need some help.

May 28, 2012 5:05 AM

Hi.
My old computer was getting a bit old and worn, so I went for another (desktop) PC. LR4 is installed on an SSD card. I used to have my photos (and still have) on an external hard drive, but as I am also about to change that, and I find it convenient to have my photos on my new D: drive, I copied the entire photo collection (sorted in YYYYMMDD if that matters) from the EHD to the pictures folder on the D: drive. I also copied the .lrcat file (and previews and backups) to the Pictures folder.
Now, opening the photos folder on D: and my Lightroom Catalog does not bring up any keywords etc. in the right window, while opening the EHD/Photos and my Lightroom Catalog does. Obviously, I have missed something, but I still haven't found out what.
Hope someone out there can help.

Thanks in advance,

Ole K

Now, opening the photos folder on D: and my Lightroom Catalog

Exactly what does this mean? What are the exact steps you followed here?

Your symptoms seem to indicate you imported all your photos into LR. Is that what you did?

I think I am being confused by your terminology.

Item 1: is this import using the Lightroom import function, or a move/copy in your operating system?

    Item 2: same question

Item 3: depending on your answers to 1 and 2, I can't give you an answer to this one yet

So, you say you moved the catalog file (*.LRCAT file) to the new computer. Have you double-clicked on this file?

No need to apologize for your terminology, if it isn't clear, we ask questions (and believe me, there are people who speak English as their native language who are far less clear).

No, the language problem is frustrating when it comes from people who speak English as their primary (only) language.

Anyway, in your operating system, you double-click on the LRCAT file. I don't think the name of the folder matters at all.
