Can You Help Me Identify This Text Effect?

May 29, 2012 8:14 AM

I'm trying to duplicate the text found in this image (I want to spell "2012"). What text effect is used to get the white, radial highlight within the text?

Thanks

A simple gradient in a circle overlaid with transparency/ Belnding modes and trimmed down with clipping mask.

    Agree with Mylenium.

If it weren't for the gradient being linear, masked to an elipse, you could've done all of it with live text and two fills. If you don't mind a radial gradient for the "refelction" you could do it. Use Path > Offset Path for the "refelction" gradient fill. No blend modes necessary.

Assuming a white background as shown, it can be done as one live text object:

White-to-transparent grad fill. Convert To Shape (ellipse) effect. Transform effect.

    Green fill. Offset Path effect.

    Green-to-darkGreen grad fill.

    However, I would simply:

    Set the text.

    Convert to paths.

    Apply green-to-darkGreen grad.

    Make Compound.

    Offset path.

    Apply solid green fill.

    Copy. Paste In Front.

    Draw ellipse.

Select ellipse and frontmost copy. Pathfinder intersect.

    Apply white-to-green grad.

Not everything has to be a just-because-you-can "cleverly" complicated stack of Appearances. Especially if exported to a non-native format for import into other programs, straightforward normal constructs without transparency involved are more robust.

My try, live text. with 3 fills with different gradients on each and the top 2 fills with offset.

edit: just realized that the ellipse with gradient on the reference is linear and mine is radial but can be easily fixed if the gradient forming the ellipse shape is with two flat colors in lighten mode or using transparency for one of the stops. The current third gradient for the top fill is doing the linear vertical transition.

That looks amazing, exactly what I was looking for. Is there any way you can email me the illustrator file at mm04xl@hotmail.com?

tdotallstar1, I didn't save the file but it takes a few minutes and I don't mind making it again and sending it to you if you tried and couldn't make it.
