This is very annoying. Some time a few months ago my CS5 Bridge suddenly stopped being able to
update. I now receive the following message.
Neither of those statements is true of course. However, I could always install updates manually especially for ACR 6.x. Now I have installed the Photoshop CS6 trial and the problem still persists. I uninstalled CS5 and CS6 and tried again to no avail. Now even worse I cannot install the ACR 7.1 update. I get the following message
ACR now has a new structure so you can no longer just pull out the .8bi file. Have no idea what is going on but I'm tearing my hair out. Note I'm running Windows 7 64 bit.
I assume that you are trying to update from PS CS6? Could you try to going to help-update, and make sure camera raw 7.1 is there and checkbox is checked? Also, please let us know your current ACR plugin version/build number by “help-plugin-camera raw.” I assume you are on Windows. Thanks.
The update option in PS CS6 is greyed out, so I can't use that. Bridge cannot update, so I cannot use that. I cannot install the ACR 7.1 update manually. The version of CS6 I installed has ACR 7.0.xx. I'm not at home at the moment so cannot check plugin version, but will do that tonight. Yes I'm on windows 7, 64 bit.
BTW on my PC using CS5, Bridge can still update. These issues are on my laptop. I didn't always have these problems, they started suddenly a few months ago.
Cheers

Solved!
By some fluke I was googling the Adobe Application Manager and I came across a method for administrators to disable auto updates. Low and behold I discovered that a file had been created
C:\Program files(x86)\common files\adobe\AAMUpdaterInventory\1.0\AdobeUpdaterAdminPrefs.dat
that did indeed disable auto updates. As soon as I deleted the file Bridge found updates immediately and installed them.
I have no idea how that file was created as administrators have to do it manually and I have never done that.
Anyway problem solved.
