I just purchased Adobe Reader X to be able to convert pdf files into excel. The first and last lines of every page i nthe pdf report will not be converted into excel. why?
Adobe Reader X does not convert anything to pdf. There is the standard commercial Acrobat Standand (for Windows) and Acrobat Pro (for Mac or Windows). Please repost in the Acrobat forum if that is what you purchased. Please include your OS and version of Excel that you are using so that we can give know how to better understand your problem.
Thank you Michael for your response.
I bought Adobe Reader X with the intention to be able to convert PDF files (coming from an accounting software into Excel. I was able to do this, except that the first and last line on the PDF report is not included on the converted report. I have Windows 7 and MS Office Home and Business 2010 version 14.0.6112.5000 (32-bit).

Where did you buy Adobe Reader? Adobe Reader can be downloaded for free from http://get.adobe.com/reader/
As Michael already explained, the free Adobe Reader cannot convert anything; it is just a reader.
But you can use the ConvertPDF service at https://www.acrobat.com/exportpdf/en/home.html to convert PDF files to Excel. Is this perhaps what you bought?
