Premiere Elements 9 Doesn't Recognize AVI file

I've recently downloaded three long videos from youtube (using a program called "youtube downloader hd"), so I could put together a short little  video. The program originally downloads it as FLV, but gave the option of converting it to AVI, which I allowed. However, when I started a new project with Premiere Elements 9, it pops up saying that the "File is not supported, or the right codec isn't installed." I'm getting frustrated, because I need to finish this video ASAP.
