AVI movie doesn't play in Premiere

May 31, 2012 2:42 PM

Hi,

I'm using Premiere CS4 on PC (Vista)

I have a avi format movie that plays in Windows Media Player or VLC.

I opened a new project in Premiere and imported the file. When press "PLAY" the cursor moves as it is playing but there is a still image from the beginning to the end.

Does anyone have an idea of what's going on?

thanks

Run the avi through Media info and post a screendump of the analysis.

Then we might know what is going on.

    Usually its a codec problem.

AVI is but a wrapper. It can contain almost anything. This ARTICLE will give you more background.

I agree with Ann, that knowing the CODEC and the specs. of that file will probably explain why it will not play properly in PrPro.

    Good luck,

Yes.  You did not capture that AVI from a DV camera, but instead you downloaded it from the Internet.

    Don't do that.

Hmm... I know that H.264 will NOT work inside an AVI wrapper http://forums.adobe.com/thread/854115 but I'm not sure about your file, other than saying it is a bit "odd" to have Mpeg4 in an AVI wrapper

I have the same problem.  It is an AVI file; Gspot reports it to have a codec MP42 with name: S-Mpeg 4 version 2.  It plays fine with VLC as well as Media Player.  I installed K-Lite codecs because I thought it might help.  The file was created from a legally purchased screen capture software.  I am using Premier Pro CS 4.  Any help would be most appreciated.

Where are these MP4 AVI files coming from?

Usually, MP4 are in an MP4 wrapper, but have been known to be in MOV files. AVI is an odd wrapper for them. Are these coming from video cameras, or from some video screen-cap program, or via some conversion?

    Just curious,

From a program called Active Presenter - it is a screen capture software.  I am using it to capture writings, presentations, videos, etc., to record an educational video for my graduate classes.  Any idea how I would change the wrapper?

By the way, I also tried ffmpeg; gives me weird errors.  I am confounded by the whole thing, and am probably not using it correctly.

Hmm.... back in #5 I posted a link explaining why H.264 will not work inside an AVI wrapper

That makes me think that MP4 also will not work when wrapped up as an AVI

Does your screen software provide any other options?

Or, do they provide software to convert their files to anything else?

    Hi John,

Yes, they provide WMV, WebM, and MPEG4.  Since I posted last I have been experimenting with WMV (same codec, by the way).  It behaves a little better than AVI (with Premiere Pro).  The source monitor plays it fine, but the sequence monitor has various problems including stuck video, cropped video, etc.

Thanks.  I might try the Windows Expression Encoder.  However, as your link shows, WMV would be the wrong one to edit.  I am still seeking a solution from the software company that generates these files - they have been quite responsive.  Let me see.
