Removing extra page space w/out changing layout sizing?

I have a document that was set up too large for the final layout, and need to lop off about 3" at the bottom of the document. If I change the document setup to the new size, the whole layout shrinks. Any idea how to get rid of the extra blank space without compromising the layout?  I know I can copy into a new layout, but this is a pain. Thanks!

    We need details. Version of ID? Current page size and margins? Desired page size and margins?

     

    Can you post a screen shot of what you have now?

    I'm in CS5, current size 28.25 x 13.6875", need 28.25 x 9.3125", no margins. Screen shot 2012-06-01 at 10.06.59 6-1-12.png

    So what happens when you go to File > Document Setup... and change the height? Layout Adjustment should be turned OFF for this particular case.

    It reduces the size of the layout (by percentage?) so the entire layout, including the blank space, fits into the new height.

    Are you sure Layout Adjustment is turned OFF? And you're using File > Document Setup... to change this, not any other procedure?

    Positive. I even tried playing around with some of the adjustments ON to see if it made any difference, but it did not.

    Standard behavior when resize pages through Document Setup is to act as if everything is *centered* on the page -- that is, as much is taken from the top as is from the bottom.

     

    CS5, does that come with the Page Resize tool? If it does you have to be *very* careful to make all of your pages the same size. I wonder if that's an option in twhere -- perhaps all you need to do is resize the applied master page.

    Peter, I don't think I have legal rights to do that.

    Jongware, this isn't a master page, just a single layout.

    Thanks for trying to help, all--I went ahead and copied it into a new document. But I really would like to try and figure this out, if I can, as I have had to do this more than once recently with the freelance client I'm working with.

    The reason I would like to see your file is because what I've told you to do works perfectly here (except for the vertcal shift noted by Jongware). There is no scaling. This leads me to think you are misunderstanding the instructions, the file is damaged, or ID is damaged on your machine.

     

    You can try the two troubleshooting 101 steps:

     

    Remove minor corruption by exporting which might fix a damaged file, or

     

    Replace Your Preferences which I think is more likely to to solve the problem if you really are following the directions.

    Here's another thought...

     

    Can you make a new file with just blank frames that shows the scaling problem? You ought to be able to share that.

    Is it possible to set Scale To Fit in the default object style? Would it react to resizing a page?

    Yes, you can set fitting options as part of an object style, but that won't cause the object to scale all by itself. Whether you've got fitting options or not should not be relevant to changing the size of a page unless your frames are being resized along with the page. The most obvious way that would happen in CS5 is if Layout Adjustment is enabled and your frames are snapped to guides.

    OK, you did say DEFAULT style, and I kind of glossed over that. The default graphics frame settings, whatever they are, are completely ignored when graphics frames are created UNLESS you happen to use the special, undocumented, style called "Place Gun Frame" (without Quotes), which becomes the default settings for all graphics frames created while placing content regardless of any other current settings. This has no effect on the drawing of empy graphics frames, they always revert to no object style, no matter what.
