CS 6 Video Editing System

Hi All,

 

The advice on selecting hardware for video editing in CS 6 on this forum is excellent. Many thanks to all those who have taken the time to post!

 

Although I am a little overwhelmed, I have tried to incorporate as much of the advice as possible and check the hardware reviews. I am relatively new to video editing and the type of work I will need to do is HD, but primarily for the internet or DVD.

 

I would appreciate it if anyone could take a look at the proposed build from AVA which costs about $2665 plus shipping.

    Looks good, but I would look for a better PSU. Thermaltake does not have the best reputation. Corsair, Seasonic and Silverstone are probably better. And consider the 932 HAF case instead of the 912.

    They have a CORSAIR AX850 Gold Power Supply available.

     

    Is it better if I use the same tower manufacturer?

    Read the link I gave above and go to the Planning page. Then go through the different panels to read my considerations. It may give you ideas. The project is still underway because I'm not in a hurry and hope for some new product introductions and price decreases, but it may be informative.

    You buy a case based on the features you need... you do NOT need to have case and power supply with the same name

    The links Harm provided influenced the original build, but on his advice, I re-read them and decided to alter it and bit.

     

    If I swap out the ASUS Rampage for the Deluxe model, replace the Velciraptor with a Seagate 2TB, and the water cooling with a COOLER MASTER, Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler (rated Gold by hardwaresecrets), then I can upgrade to the larger COOLER MASTER, HAF 932 Advanced and keep the price about the same.

     

    Given my projected video editing demands, it doesn't seem like the ASUS Rampage MB offers much more than the ASUS Deluxe MB and the latter contains BT and wireless.

     

    Since I do not intend to OC, there doesn't seem to be a great need for liquid cooling, especially with the larger tower case. At any rate, it does feel better not put "liquid" and "computer" in the same sentence!

     

    The Corsair AX850 Gold power supply does indeed seem to be a better choice.

     

    There doesn't seem to a concensus in the all the discussions relating to using a SSD vs a hard drive for the boot disk. However, since boot speed is not an issue for me I don't need an SSD and the Velociraptor seems to a unnessary expense. While I don't need 2TB for the boot drive, they are not much more than the 1TB.

     

    The only question remaining is filtering the air. This machine will be in a dusty (but not dirty) environment. I read Harm's thoughts on air filtering provide in his link, but don't want to go the custom route. These aftermarket filters look nice http://www.frozencpu.com/products/11729/ffi-57/DEMCiflex_Cooler_Master _HAF_932_Magnetic_Dust_Fan_Filter_Set_-_4_Piece.html, but for the cost, I'd rather put another $50-60 into the case and get one with good filtering.

     

    Does anyone have experience with a stock Full Tower with complete built-in filters they have actually used in a dusty environment they would be willing to share?

    That is exactly the company I ordered the dust filters from (DemciFlex). They are underway from South Africa and as soon as I recieve them I will be posting images and tell you my opinion. The reason I went for these is that we have two cats, one of them a Maine Coon but very small for the race, and with all the hairs they lose,...

    Our cat is about average at 40 pounds, but at least she does not shed a lot

    We brought her home when she was 4 weeks old, so her "jungle" is not very wild... but she is a bit spoiled, so wants what she wants when SHE wants it

     

    But, due to early training, she will "talk" to me, but I can sit with her while she has her daily raw chicken leg meals and she is not aggressive

    The Fractal Case solves the final major problem, but a few recent posts have called the choice of hard drives into question.

     

    Right now I am considering replacing the 4 Seagate Barracuda 2TB with 4 Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB. It is a shame to give up 50% capacity, but I'd rather have a more reliable system since I don't have much affinity with computer hardware maintenance and trouble shooting.

     

    With reliability in mind, I am also considering dropping the CD R/W since that capability is built into the Blueray device. I simply left it in the configuration since it was only about $20-30. Removing it eliminates one potential failure point.

     

    Likewise, the 75 in 1 card reader is only $15-20 but these units don't seem to be terribly reliable based on the reviews. Having it in the system reduces the clutter on the desk, but I suppose an external one would work well enough. Removing it from the build eliminates another potential failure point.

     

    Does anyone have an opinion on the hard drives or the two mentioned accessories?

    VideoShui,

     

    Regarding drives, larger is better, but don't buy a model that Newegg ratings show to be a lemon; for example, Seagate's ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 64MB cache 1yr wtty drive selling for $120 this morning has horrible user feedback whereas the ST32000641AS 2TB 7200 64MB drive has much improved user feedback and a 5yr wtty from Seagate.

     

    Regarding accessories: CD R/W is your call; I would not consider that a "failure point". Now for the 75 in 1 reader, I personally prefer the external devices so that I can plug in my memory sticks/cards with the device unpowered (not plugged into the PC) and then plug in the USB cable. With any built-in reader you are sliding your card into a powered device which does not seem as gentle. I always turns cameras off too before loading or removing memory cards as well.

    Thank you for the suggestions Jim. The information on the Seagate drives is helpful, I will check the models offered.

     

    I did not know that about the un-powered vs. powered device relating to the storage media. I will certainly drop it from the system and get an external one.
