Make dot matrix icons (pure svg)

I want to make dot matrix icons (a lot). I have the shapes but i need to convert them to dot matrix.

I was thinking to put the shape in front of a dot matrix background and delete dot by dot to form the dot matrix shape.

But anybody know a way to automate that?

I tried with swatches and with pathfinder but dots result are cut in the corners

1 - This is the shape with the dot matrix background

2 - And here i delete al visible dots around

3 - So this the result (the expected)

And here i tried with swatches and this is the result (very easy and useful for large icons quantity but i don't like the cutted dots)

So if anyone knows how to delete the dots that not touch the front shape, that would solve my problem

Thank you

Object --> Path --> Split into Grid

Object --> Transform --> Transform Each

Ah, there we go, Monika. That's exactly the method I was trying to come up with, mentally.

Get your icon, and knockout a large square with it (so that the icon's outlines create negative space in the square).

    Create your dot array.

Put that knocked-out square above the dot array.

Select both knocked-out square and dots, then Pathfinder Panel > Unite.

Use Direct Selection Tool to select the knockout, which is now adjoined with the dots it even slightly overlapped. Delete.

You just culled all unwanted dots.

    1. Draw the graphic.

    2. Object>Rasterize.

    3. Object>Create Object Mosaic. Ungroup.

    4. Effect>Convert To Shape:Ellipse Absolute size. Expand Appearance.
