How to Fade a selection without going to 0

May 29, 2012 2:51 AM

Tags: #audition #cs6 #process #amplify/fade

In Audition 3 I used amplify/fade process to fade a selection to a specific volume.

For example I would begin with no reduction in volume then fade say 3db, but not all the way out.

Is this possible in CS6?

The new waveform gain and fade buttons work on the whole waveform, even when a selection is made.

The "Favorites" Fade In and Fade Out go all the way to 0.

How can I fade a selection a little, but not all the way as I did with the Fade tab in "amplify/fade proccess" in Audition 3?

You need to be using the Fade Envelope effect under Effects/Amplitude and Compression menu. You can set keyframes across your select audio and adjust the levels visually on the waveform, similar to Volume Envelopes in the Multitrack view.

How do I ask a question in this community, once I'm logged in.

And how come I can't figure out how to fade audio in Audition version 4.0.

It shouldn't be this hard to figure out.

I have no idea why at all. But you haven't specified exactly where or how you want to fade it, so I can't be any more specific about that.

    Thanks for the reply.

In Audition 3.0 I would just highlight audio and click effects/amplify/fade.

In Audition 4.0 I can’t find anything like that, and even when I click on volume envelope, and read all the “Help” topics on Adobe’s site, I still can’t do a simple fade out, or fade in, of audio?

    Sincerely,

    JD

In Audition CS 5.5, you can fade in or out a selected region a few ways:

    1. Select Favorites > Fade In / Fade Out to apply a straight linear fade

    2. Select Effects > Amplitude and Compression > Volume Envelope.  You can adjust the curve manually by editing the envelope in the waveform view, or by selecting one of the effect presets

    Thanks.

Does this information below apply to version 4.0 which I’m asking about too?

Audition 4.0 IS Audition CS 5.5.  The newly released CS6 is version 5.0 under the hood.

    Thanks Durin!

Ps I read I’m supposed to save my Audition 3.0 .ses files, as .hml, so I can open them in the new Audition versions...

But when I click “save as” and use that drop down box, the only option it gives me is multitrack.ses???

Also, is there a way in 4.0 to get it to only play what’s on screen, instead of continuing to scross.

I did disable the scrolling feature in preferences.

I'm not sure why you don't see the XML (*.xml) option in the "Save as Type" dropdown.  Can you quickly step through which menu items and buttons you're clicking?

But, before we go too deep into troubleshooting this, I HIGHLY recommend you download a tool called SES2SESX, available for free but happily accepting donations at http://www.aatranslator.com.au/ses2sesx.html  It is written by forum user SuiteSpot and supported by several others, and is an excellent session conversion tool for any session file from Cool Edit Pro 1.0 through Audition 3, and includes support for many third-party effects.  It performs a better conversion of sessions than the native Audition CS6 importer.

At this time, Audition will continue to play off-screen.  The request to limit playback to the current view has come up a few times over the last few months, and I'll make sure the feature request in our backlog is reviewed and prioritized soon.

I guess I’d better download that.

    How do I use it?

Anyway, all I click from an open multitrack .ses file is:

File/save session as…and then in the “save as type” it defaults to the ONLY option and has no .hml option.

Thanks much for your helpful replies!

    Thanks for your help.

A few follow up questions (related to multi-track), if you'd be so kind (version5.5):

    1.       When I remove an audio clip using ripple delete it moves the other clips on that same track, how to avoid this?

    2.       Likewise, when I insert a clip into multi-track, sometimes it puts it on a brand new track by itself, how can I avoid this? And how to I remove a blank multi-track?

    3.       Is there a way to remove that left meter area that takes up so much space, with the mute and 'default stereo' and all that stuff I rarely if ever use?

    4.       Is it possible set multi-track to only play what is hi-lighted, rather than continuing on?

    5.       Lastly, some clips that are short/small are very hard to grab in multi-track, and these red brackets show up, when I'm trying to grab the file to slide it, (what's that for, and how can I disable that, so I can slide tiny files around, easier?)

Who are you anyway, you are very knowledgeable, I was getting frustrated until you came along.

    Thanks again!

See you haven't figured out how to start a new thread yet, despite my very simple instructions... it's on the right at the top.

Well it would! That's what it's supposed to do! If you don't want the rest of the clips to move, just use Delete, not Ripple Delete. It's a right-click option if you highlight the clip, or just highlight and hit the 'Delete' key.

    2.       Likewise, when I insert a clip into multi-track, sometimes it puts it on a brand new track by itself, how can I avoid this? And how to I remove a blank multi-track?

Easiest way to put clips exactly where you want them is to pick them up with the mouse, drag them and place them. If you have a blank track you want to get rid of, then highlight it, and go to Multitrack>Track>Delete selected track. Alternatively, highlight and go Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.

    3.       Is there a way to remove that left meter area that takes up so much space, with the mute and 'default stereo' and all that stuff I rarely if ever use?

Not really, no. If you shrink the box, it only shrinks from the left, not the right (click on the junction between the track and the box to do this). Unfortunately this means that the useful information in the text boxes shrinks, and the meter remains.

If you highlight a section and hit the loop playback button (two along from the play button) you won't stop playback, but it won't continue through the session, repeating from the start again when it finishes. In multitrack, there are no other options.

As for the short clips problem, I suggest zooming in on them. Ctrl-scroll will scroll them in and out horizontally very rapidly, with the scroll centred on where the cursor (not the CTI) is.

Ps I would start a new thread, but I cannot even find my way back to the page where I find that option on the site. Haha

I'm sure it's simple...but not for someone new, what's the link to find my way there?

Follow up question, so when I'm editing, I want to slide the "selection view" and "time view" along the bottom, more over to the right along the bottom, but all I can seem to do is replace something or it slaps it upright along the right side. And I don't really want to "unlock" them so they float, either...I just want them in order:

Transport, zoom, time and selection view

Ideas? Thanks again for your help?

To get back to the main Audition CS5.5 and CS6 message board, look at the top or bottom of the message thread for links that look like:

    Screen Shot 2012-06-11 at 5.20.08 PM.png

    or

    Screen Shot 2012-06-11 at 5.21.20 PM.png

and click on "Audition CS5.5 & CS6" or just click here: http://forums.adobe.com/community/audition/audition_general

To answer your question, Audition and other Adobe applications allow you to reassemble your panels a few ways. When you grab a panels tab and start to drag it over other panels, you'll see purple shapes appear on the lower panels.  These indicate "drop zones" and depending on which ones are visible when you release the mouse, your panel will be inserted or overlaid in that area.

If you release the mouse while over another panels tab (you'll see a purple rectangle along the top of the panel) it will stack your panel on the others which allows you to see one-at-a-time.

If you release while the cursor is on the top or bottom portion of a panel (you'll see a trapezoidal shape on top or bottom of the panel) then it will insert your panel above or below the existing panel, but maintain the same overall height, so both panels will be reduced in height by 1/2.

If you release while the cursor is on the right or left portion of a panel (you'll see a trapezoidal shape on the left or right of the panel) then it will insert your panel to the left or right of the existing panel, but maintain the same overall width, so both panels will be reduced in width by 1/2.
