i cant figure out how to use the 3d tool in photoshop, any tips

I recently went to CS5 and ordered the book "3D in photoshop, the ultimate guide for professionals" from Amazon.
It helped quite a bit.

It is one of the more complicated features in photoshop though

Yes, Photoshop Exetnded 3D in CS5 was not as easy as it could be, but we made major improvents in 3D for CS6.
