Originally I downloaded the trial version of lightroom 4. Purchased serial number from adobe so I have no disc but I am registered. When 4.1 was released I installed that and everything worked well for several days. Then the develop module started hangin up. Lots of time with the spinning disc. Now 4.1 is stuck in develop and will not fully load. Lightroom freezes up and I must control alt delete to get away from the dead screen. Should I uninstall and reinstall?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks, Vaughn
Windows 7.
In pure frustration as I tried to start LR4 up during the initial phase, as
it was floundering in develop mode, I multi-clicked on the red x. LR bumped
out of the stuck develop and loaded correctly in library mode. From there I
was able to move into and out of develop for several hours. When I finished
the sessions I did a complete shut down. Restarting and attempting to move
back into develop it hung again.
I will thrash the preferences and try a new catalog. Thanks for the reply.

LOL No need to panic, I'm very friendly! ![]()
A clean catalog is just a troubleshooting step, to decide whether it's a catalog problem or a global problem, so don't worry, it's not a suggestion to start again.
File handling - I'm assuming that's the DNG setting in preferences? That's unlikely to change anything.
Try trashing the preferences (if you need instructions, just ask) and see if that solves it once and for all. It may. If it doesn't, then try a test clean catalog to see if it happens in there. That'll give us extra clues.
From the pinnacle of digital happiness to the depth of despair. You were
right about the DNG in preferences, I was hoping you were wrong; the LR 4
problems have come back. I would appreciate help trashing the preferences,
and any other suggestions. This stuff is so much fun when it works and so
frustrating when it goes down. In the meantime I think I will work with PS
6. Thanks Vaughn
Vaughn, I thought something was strange when you talked about updating Camera Raw fixed your issue. Lightroom has camera raw built in and can only be updated by a whole new d/load of the app. The Camera Raw plug in for PS is a different beast specifically for PS.
Anyway you can find the Preference file through this kb item: http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroo m-4.html
Hi Geoff,
Obviously I'm in over my head. Things started going wrong after I updated
LR4 to 4.1. At almost the same time my license for PS6 expired. Chatting
with some fellow in India that wanted me to reset my clock and reload
something. I decided to uninstall the trial version of CS6 which I had
downloaded and purchased. I reinstalled CS6 from disc and got rid of the
expired license nonsense. I don't know how all this could be related but it
seems like too much of a coincidence. Back to LR4 I started getting
messages when I moved from LR to PS6. The messaged said I needed to
download ACR 7.1 in order to Render the file in PS. I did that via the PS
help menu.
After Ctrl Save in PS and moving back into LR is when the develop module
in LR started to hang up and freeze LR. Victoria suggested trashing LR
preferences, not really understanding that I went through the preferences
and found, under external file handling the default setting was Camera Raw
4.1. That seemed odd so I changed it to CR 7.1. For whatever reason
everything worked for most of the day. Then I wanted to adjust some file
sizes and canvass sizes so I moved them to PS6 and got them ready to print.
Moving back to LR those files caused it to hang. Noticing the symbol for
metadata having been changed I picked one of the choices; I think it was
rewrite with new information. The warning symbol associated with each
photo disappeared and once again the develop mode is accessible.
For now I'm holding my breath and hoping everything continues to work.
Thank you for your assistance.
Vaughn
OK, I'm back. After LR working fine yesterday I shut it down for the night.
Upon starting up in the morning same problems; after a couple of attempts I
was able to open a new catalog. Going back to an earlier suggestions.
Flawless performance in the new catalog. I did create a rather large file
when I focus stacked 7 D800 RAW files creating one file saved as a tif.
Still everything worked. Tonight I tried to reopen and the new catalog hung
up. Does this latest incident give you any ideas?
Thanks Vaughn
