deleting div tags

How can I permanently delete a div tag.  I delete it under the css styles, then go into the code and delete any reference to it, but if I try to use the div tag name again, it says my page already had that id in use?

    You may have used it more than once.

    Use Ctrl+F (Find) for the Div ID in your code.
