Text not Highlighting

Using Illustrator CS6 on a Mac.

 

Text I have typed will no longer highlight when I drag the cursor over the characters, select-all, or shift-arrow. 

 

???

 

UPDATE:  It looks like the highlighting "Function" still works, as I am able to select text with an invisible highlight, copy, and then paste - but no color shows when highlighting.
