Internet Censorship Bill

Nov 28, 2011 8:17 PM

Don't know if this is allowed here or even if this is the right place to post this info, but,

I just got this in my school's academic email, and I don't want this law to be passed. Can you help, please?

Thanks.

More info:

rotect IP" and "SOPA") that would let the government or any corporation censor the internet, using the same DNS-blocking techniques as Iran or China.

More here: http://americancensorship.org/

The bills are ostensibly to stop copyright and trademark infringement, but they won't. Instead-- they'll let the government shut down almost any social media website, since any site can be shut down just for audio, video, text, or even *links* posted by its users. Any corporations will have the power to bankrupt any website or organization by cutting it off from payments, advertising and donations-- without so much as a court order.

The law is being pushed by some of the strongest lobbies in Washington, it has broad bipartisan support, and it's likely to pass in some form. I've been active against it: next week I'll be participating in a nationwide call-in day. Can you join me, and help me spread the word by forwarding this email?

Wow, lounge not dead yet still huh?

Yeah SOPA/PIPA are crimes against humanity.  They'll eventually get the control they want, they'll just bundle the stuff incrementally into smaller bills.  The Feds can do pretty much whatever they want these days, but the whole thing is unsustainable.  We might as well be living in southern Europe 300 AD...

Worse than Internet censorship is this:

Patenting food supply or life itself

Yes, it is frightening... but that's the tip of the iceberg when it comes to patenting. Here's and example:

There's a type of rice in India called 'Basmati'. It's long-grained and fragrant. generally. not too cheap either . A company in the US patented the name. Right, they patented the name 'Basmati'. Then turned around and claimed that no one else could use that name for rice anywhere in the world! Fortunately, someone in the Indian Govt. woke up and took the issue to court. But the case had to be fought in a US court.

That's just an example. There are tonnes of herbs, etc. that have been used in India for millennia. The Indian market is full of products from these preparations. Nobody, naturally, patents them. They only patent the brand names and logo/packaging designs. But companies in the USA have patented these and gone so far as to say their use is an infringement of copyright! And so it goes...

Don't want to bore everyone with details but it is frightening the kind of monster the patent laws have unleashed.

I didn't know that bout Basmati. I use it almost exclusively (except for risottos).

But I believe you have the process wrong. One trademarks a name but patents an invention. I have been through that myself.

Sorry... I wasn't clear... it was/is a combination of patent and trademark laws... should have said trademark when i referred to 'Basmati'. But the patent / trademark also applies to areas such as 'neem' - (from Wikipedia: a tree in the mahogany family Meliaceae. It is one of two species in the genus Azadirachta) for toothpaste as well as skin care; turmeric, also for skin care, as well as a host of others... In some cases, companies are claiming trademark rights, in some, with minor modifications, patent.

Glad you like Basmati. It's pretty good! But there are a host of others as well

The devil is in the details, as always!

Of all the varieties I have tasted, Basmati is wonderful because it stands alone in it's own taste, yet melds well with other foods. Arborio is the exact opposite: No flavor but take up the flavors of whatever is included when cooking with it .
