PS CS6 has no sound with AVCHD videos from Sony Cybershot

System Specs:

PS CS6, fully updated

win7/64 fully patched

16gb ram, 11+ GB free

ssd scratch drive, 40gb free

camera:  Sony cybershot dsc-hx30v

files: *.MTS

CPU: intel quad core sandy bridge 2600k, 3.4Ghz

GPU: AMD 6950 2gb

The videos play fine in VLC 2.0.1, windows media player, GSpot 2.70a (in thumbnail window). An ancient Nero showtime even sort of plays the video (choppy and partially mangled), but the audio is fine. VLC and WMP play smoothly at full screen, 2560x1600.

In PS, there is no audio. Both microphone icons have sound waves emanating and I have tried all 4 combinations of mute and play.

I can edit and save them to h.264, high quality, 1920x1080, 59.94 fps, progressive *.mp4 file. The video plays on the other players, but again there is no sound.

GSpot shows LAV splitter -> ffdshow addio decoder -> ac3filter -> default directSound device (see details below)

When playing in PS, the video is choppy. It will play for ~1/2 second and then stutter.

Searching for a suitable group with key words (photoshop cs6 avchd video no sound)

yields 505 groups. Looks like any group to have ever had cs6 in a thread. Hmmm.

It can't be a codec problem if every other video product I have plays the files. It is certainly not a hardware limitation. It looks like a PS bug.

I'm thinking that should be a supported format, but wondering if there is anything built into the ACR updates.  A bit of a long shot, but have you got 7.1 installed?

    This from a previous post:

Is the audio encoding in Dolby? One would need a license for that, and it would then required Premiere Pro to be installed, as it is the only soft with the license:

I currently don't have any good news for you.

The Sony Cybershot spec has it's audio encoded in AC-3 Dolby Digital.

    ( Id=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666429167#specifi cations)

It is one of only a few digital cameras on the market with that encoder.

Adobe Photoshop does not have a license from Dolby to decode AC3.

Photoshop cannot use the license from your system or other applications. It is a professional product and must hold it's own licence.

Although, if you have Premiere Pro CS6 installed, it should be allowed to pick up the license from that.

We're still looking for a good solution.

I'm sorry for your trouble and thank you for your patience,

On the Premiere Pro "side of the street," DD AC3 Audio Streams were a problem, up through PrPro CS3. However, Adobe Encore in the stand-alone version through EncoreDVD 2.0, had an AC3 .dll, that shipped and installed with it. That .dll could be copied to the PrPro root folder, and things worked fine. When Encore came out, the .dll file's name changed a bit, but that trick still worked. With PrPro & CS 4 (initial release), the trick did not function, as it had previously. However, with about the second update for PrPro & Encore (were bundled together, as of CS 3), full DD AC3 support was included for PrPro, so those MTS files would then Import. That was about the time that PrPro added full, native support for AVCHD and hence, MTS, with their common DD AC3 Audio Streams.

I appreciate knowing that Adobe is looking into the DD AC3 license for PS. Until such time as that is rectified, the OP might want to rip the DD AC3 Audio Stream from the MTS (Adobe Audition does this nicely, and probably so will the free audio-editor, Audacity), and then Save_As PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit. There are probably many other ripping options available, and perhaps even VLC Player can do that?

As I do not edit Video in PS-Extended, I might be a bit in a "gray area" here, but in PrPro, one would just Import that resultant PCM/WAV into the Project, and drag it to the Timeline, into an appropriate Audio Track. If the CTI (Current Time Indicator/Playhead) is at the beginning of the Video Clip, and Snap is ON, that Audio Clip will snap into place.

    Good luck,

I understand that the PP demo self-destructs after 3 uses and I just burned one.

Premiere Pro comes with a "three trials," for the Minnetonka Audio DD 5.1 SS SurCode Encoder plug-in. That is ONLY for DD 5.1 SS Export. After those three trial uses, one must purchase a key for the SurCode Encoder plug-in, to Export the DD 5.1 SS Audio Stream from a Project, that was set up with a DD 5.1 SS Master Audio Track.

As for Importing DD AC3, there are no usage limitations involved - only for Export, and for DD 5.1 SS. PrPro will Export (Transcode) to DD AC3 Stereo, on an unlimited basis.

What you found is correct, but ONLY for DD 5.1 SS Export via the SurCode plug-in.

Now, and again from the PrPro side-of-the-street, many AVCHD users have had issues with Audio, if they did not Copy over the entire folder structure from the camera's SD card. If they ONLY Copied over the media files, they often lost Audio (and also lost the capability to span the files into one Clip, as there is an ~ 4GB limit to the files, though the Clip can be much longer). If you did not Copy the entire folder structure, I would do that, and then Import the AVCHD files into PS again. There are files in those other folders, that PrPro (remember, I am talking about Premiere here, and things may well be different in PS-Extended) needs, and uses, beyond just the media files. Test, just in case that issue affects PS-Extended too.

    Good luck,

PS - As far as the .dll Copy, in Premiere, that ceased to work, as of CS4. However, at about CS4.2 (?), the full AC3 capability was added. I also do not know what the .dll file is, as of CS4.2. Up through CS3, it was something like ad2mac3dec.dll, but changed a bit, from version to version.

In short after reading LOTS of people complaining like you have, like I have like probably about 1 million people who own AVCHD cameras have that the most used format to shoot on for home /semi pro users is AVCHD and Premiere... get ready for this... take a deep breath.... DOESNT SUPPORT ITS AUDIO FILES. Its apparently licensed by DOLBY and you ahve to contact and minktonka company and pay.... really sit down first... take another deep breath... they want $300 for the plugin to make it work.

So Adobe have shafted.... is that a polite enough word... its customers who just want to play their files - not even encode the project to dolby digital - just play and edit their stuff. No even though you own that camera which only lets you shoot in that format and even though you are stuck wanting Premiere, adobe thinks that for the large monthly sum the world can go sit on its finger before they will sort this out.

    Charming huh.

Adobe are you listening..... hello Adobe... have you gone mad Adobe... hello. Earth calling Adobe.

As someone pointed out you can play these files on quicktime, media player... so seems apple and microsoft PAY THEIR LICENCES ON BEHALF OF THE USERS OF THEIR PRODUCTS. Adobe must either be skinflints or maybe a nephew of theirs owns Minkytonkatoy firm who are selling that annoying plugin. Ever heard of download sites... cough cough.

What camera are you using that is producing AVCHD files?

What version of Photoshop are you using?

    Just found this thread.

Am using the (extremely popular) Sony RX100, which produces AVCHD video files.

As with the others, I have video playback, but no audio playback on CS6 - running on Windows 8.

Right-clicking on a file presents 4 options for playback. Photoshop; Photos App; Video App; Windows Media Player.

The last three will BOTH audio and video.

Right-clicking on a file says that it is .MTS format.

This list p-cs6.html says that .MTS was introduced in CS6.

But, if I click on the Audio button and then press play, the Audio button is immediately turned off.

Great, so why isn't the audio working?

    Hi Dinarius,

Unfortunately, there has been no progress on this since I posted a reply to the other Cybershot user.

The Sony Cybershot spec has it's audio encoded in AC-3 Dolby Digital.

    (   Id=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666429167#specif i cations)

It is one of only a few digital cameras on the market with that encoder - that has no other option.

Adobe Photoshop does not have a license from Dolby to decode AC3.

Photoshop cannot use the license from your system or other applications. It is a professional product and must hold it's own licence.  Although, if you have Premiere Pro installed, Photoshop should be allowed to pick up the license from that.

This thread mentions some options for converting the audio:

We're really are still looking for a good solution.

We're sorry for the trouble and thank you for your patience,
