Hi there, I really hope someone can help me as i have just purchased PSE10 for Mac and am a complete novice!. I have bought the book 'The photoshop elements 10 book for digital photographers' and would like to begin to learn to edit my jpeg photos (organised in iphoto) in camera raw, however after setting PSE 10 as my external editer it only opens the jpegs in an editer but not the camera raw one.
Is there a way of changing this? I've searched the net for a the answer but cant find it
I plan to take future photos in Raw mode so I only need this for my existing photos
Many thanks
Chris
Not sure about iPhoto but you cdan opeb directly from the Editor App.
Open the Editor and click: File à Open Select your image and choose camera raw as the format, then click the Open button. The image should open in the Adobe Camera Raw dialog where you ca use all the regular sliders.
The attached notes should be helpful.

Thanks for your reply, when I select open from the Editor App do I pick the photo I want to edit by going into photos and choosing from the iPhoto menu?
If so when edited does it automatically save back into iPhoto?
Does anyone know if I can set it up to edit jpegs in camera raw when using iPhoto and PSE 10 as the external editor?
You will have to export the photos from iphoto before you can do this. There is no way to get the communications going for opening jpegs this way and creating iphoto versions. Then import the edited photos as new files. You should not try to get into the iphoto library from outside iphoto. That is for iphoto's own use, not yours, and if you were somehow able to write into it from outside iphoto you could corrupt it and lose all your photos.
Thanks for your reply Barbara, as I'm a complete novice could you explain how its best to import the photos to PSE10, is it best to import the ones I want to edit into the PSE Organiser? or create a folder on my desktop and open them from there in the editor? If I import them to the Organiser can I then open the jpegs in camer raw in the editor?
Also could you explain the best way to import the edited files back into iphoto?
Many thanks
There's no reason to use organizer unless you want to. If you want to try it out, make a test catalog with a few images to see if you like it.
You don't "import" anything to PSE unless you use organizer. You can set PSE as your external editor from iphoto for normal use, if you want. It's just the jpg to raw converter thing is too complicated for that to understand. You can't open organizer jpgs into the raw converter without using File>Open in the Editor, either.
You import edited photos to iphoto like any other photo-- File>Import to Library.
Thanks again Barbara you have cleared up a few things there that I was really struggling with. I'm still a bit confused though about the correct way to open jpegs in camera raw. I now know I have to choose file and open and I tested this on a photo that was just saved to my desktop and it worked so should I make copies of the photos I want to edit (from iPhoto) (in camera raw) onto my desktop and choose file open then desktop so that I don't corrupt anything in iPhoto?
Sorry to be a pain, once I know this I will be able to get into my book and start to learn how to edit
