Catalog PSE and LR

Are the LR and PSE Catalogues connected?

I cannot move PSE catalog because it tells me it is in use by another program.

I have some files in PSE that came from LR that I got on trial that expired.

What can I do?

Thanks.

No the catalogs are separate although from the Library module you can click File à Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog.

Most people use Lightroom as their primary raw editor but with Elements or CS6 set up as the external Editing app to do some of the more fancy stuff involving layers and masks. The initial image is sent to Elements as a PSD or Tiff together with the Lightroom Develop settings but the results after further editing in PSE are saved back to the Lightroom Library.

You normally make the round trip from Lightroom as follows:

    1) Ctrl+E in the Library to export with develop settings

    2) Edit in Elements; then Ctrl+S to overwrite Lightroom export copy

    3) Ctrl+W to close in Elements and update Lightroom thumbnail.

    Hi 99jon,

    If you look at the former post by Marina_ML, you'll see that her problem is different : she is trying to move a PSE catalog and she finds that some files are blocked, supposedly in use by another program;

This happened to me a few times, and I must say I don't know why or how to solve the problem simply.

I would try to create a duplicate of the PSE catalog folder : if this operation is not blocked by the same message, it would be possible to work from the duplicate catalog, since I do not believe that the media files are blocked, only the catalog file.

Do you think this is worth a try ?

Catalog conversion from PSE is not always straightforward. Works best with a catalog of photos. If there are slideshows, videos etc that can cause problems.

Could check the task/activity manager and close other programs, including Elements running in the background.

    Yes.

Worth trying a new catalog with only photos.

If you don’t have a huge catalog, it might be simpler to write metadata to files in Elements and then simply import straight into Lightroom using the Add button.

Sometimes, there is a lock placed on the catalog file by PSE, which doesn't get removed. Look for a *.lock or *.lck file in the same directory as the PSE catalog. If you find such a file, delete it. It's worth a try.
