Cannot select "overprint fill"

I am unable to choose "overprint fill" for any of the vector or eps images in my file. Under attributes, everything except "nonprinting" is greyed out. Help?

    The overprint fill and stroke boxes in the Attributes panel affect the frame, not the content, so if you don't have a fill or stroke applied to the frame itself they will be grayed out. If you want your placed vectors to overprint, you need to set that in the art before placing. The exception to this is grayscale and bitmap mode rasters.
