is my adobe reader valid?

My adobe reader 9 throws up an error when I try to update. I've been asked to remove it using control panel but it says this 'patch package' may not be valid and will not allow me to remove it?????

Please download the Adobe Reader Cleaner Tool from http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html , download the new Adobe Reader X from adobe.com and install.
