Lossy DNG and Apple Finder

Jun 18, 2012 8:11 AM

I'd like to convert my RAW files to DNG lossy files but the Finder is not showing the thumbnails of the converted files nor is Preview opening them.

With lossless DNG converted files I have no problems. I'm using Mac OS 10.6.8.

Any solution to this?

Thanks.

Apple will need to update its DNG support. It's already a bit beind the curve, so don't hold your breath.

That was probably written by some anti-DNG troll. Each of those three points seems wrong.

"I'd like to convert my RAW files to DNG lossy files"

Why? I take the line that if a picture is worth keeping, it's worth keeping 100%, so the only pictures I save as lossy DNG are the few JPEGs I ever shoot.

Or are you really wanting "Fast Load"? This has advantages.

Fast load makes sense - though loading is so quick I can't see the difference.

I use DNG with fastload now but not lossycompressed.

Thumbnails can be viewed and files opened with Preview.

    MBP 10.7.4 - I guess it's a limitation of your OS.

With lossy compression I can see the thumbnail but Preview does not support the file. Apple issue!!

It is an Apple issue. Once Adobe documents the new format, Apple will have the option to support it. However, Apple's support for DNG has always been incomplete. Linear DNG is still not supported, which matters if you use a camera with a non-stanard sensor, e.g. Foveon.

It turns out that no documentation is required from Adobe.  The DNGs simply contain an extra optional preview tag that ought to be ignored by other software, but unfortunately this is confusing the software into misreading the files.  This is due to a current limitation in the dcraw source code that many other raw processing software is based on.  I hope a new version of dcraw will soon be posted.

    Eric,

Ummm, sorry, but call me dumb if want, you guys HAVE to to document this. My apps - dcpTool, CornerFix, etc sure aren't based on DCRaw (the source code is available on SourceForge for those interested). Unless you guys document what you've done, and update the SDK, they're not going to be updated.
