Bind key commands/actions to scripts

Mar 13, 2009 11:23 PM

There's a lot of good scripts out there, please allow us to trigger them quickly with shortcuts or actions

This has been requested before, and deserves to be requested repeatedly. For script users it would be a huge productivity boost.
By the way, you can make an action trigger a script now, but you have to re-set it every time the application is re-started, so it's really more of a bug fix than a new feature.

You don't record it. You use the Insert Menu Item step in the Action. But as Michael mentions, it doesn't survive restarts of the program. The bug has existed (and has been reported) for four full versions now.

It would be very helpful if the Scripts list could be a persistent window. Some AI windows can be made "persistent" (stay open after use) but this one can't. So many "missing features" have been solved by scripts (and clever scripters); for those of us who need a particular task, often, to do our daily work, it would be so much easier to use them if it didn't take a long reach and swipe with the cursor to get at a tiny little place on the string of items to open a window, then have to repeat the same wrist-straining sequence of movements.

I had considered making a Feature Request, but this thread seems to cover it.

I tested it in Illustrator CS5 and the problem of Scripts being removed from Actions at restart seems to have been preserved yet again.

The Illustrator team’s refusal/unwillingness/incapability/… of solving this in another new version seems quite remarkable.

I certainly don’t understand the programming difficulties that would pose, but are they really worth annoying users with that shortcoming for four (or how many versions is it now actually?) versions?

It would be so interesting to read some explanation/justification/… from some Adobe employee for the decision to keep a bug (I guess the term is appropriate in this case) for yet another version of Illustrator.

it might be embarrassing, but it would be more honorable to admit defeat and say..."sorry to disappoint our customers, but due to some technical difficulties, this is something we are unable to fix"...end of story.

...but I'm more inclined to think that absolutely nobody from Adobe is getting paid to monitor this forum or any other Illustrator forum as a matter of fact.

I would rather have ZERO new features in CS7, in favor some of the long broken "old features" fixed.

But what would the marketing department say?

they won't like it of course, it makes no sense business wise...and it won't happen, that's just my take.

Aren’t you all curious if the Illustrator team can stick with tradition and maintain this roadbump for efficient working for yet another version with Illustrator CC?
