Hello,
On OSX Lion. Just installed the Creative Suite (paid subscription).
I can launch Photoshop just fine, but when I open any image it locks indefinitely once I go to edit it. I've left it sitting for hours with no luck.
What's happening?

Try resetting the Photoshop preferences :
> If Photoshop is already open on your screen, close out of it. Then hold down Shift+Command+Option (Mac) on your keyboard and start Photoshop back up.
> The very first thing you'll see is a dialog box that pops up asking if you want to delete the existing Preferences file (which it calls the "Settings" file).
> To reset Photoshop Preferences to the defaults, click Yes in the dialog box. The existing Preferences file will be scrapped and a brand new one will be created.
Launch Photoshop again and check if it works fine now.
Hi there,
Thanks for the speedy response. I tried that and followed the steps you outlined.
Photoshop still displays the same behaviour. That is, I can open an image but as soon as I select a tool from the toolbar to edit the image the program freezes. Even if I reboot and ONLY PS is running, it freezes.
TIA for any help you can provide!

Does that happen with a specific image?
Try opening different images stored at a diferent location and check.
You might also wanna create a new jpeg image and then save it. Open that image and try adding efects and check if it works.
Try the same with other sample files, may be of different formats.
Hello Arpit,
It diplays the same behaviour with any image from any location. Format is irrelevant.
With a new image, it's not quite as slow - about 2 minutes to respond after selecting a new tool. Still not acceptable from a workflow standpoint.
I found out that at one time an older version of Photoshop was installed on this machine. It's not installed now. Could there be some lingering libraries that are causing conflicts?
Thank you again for your assistance
Niallc!
I think Curt is correct, it may be an issue with Fonts. Try the below articles that explains how to troubleshoot fonts and plugins and check if that helps.

Great news!
We encounter a lot of similar issues, in Adobe Premiere Pro (and Elements) with its Titler. While PS is sensitive to issues with fonts (and not just corrupt ones), Titler is even more sensitive, and will crash that sub-application, that is launched from within Premiere, the "host application."
Having too many fonts installed, and active, can sap enough resources to crash a system, that is any way marginal.
I would look at a font-management program, and especially one that has a font-corruption utility.
On my workstation, I have 9000 - 10000 fonts, but seldom have more than about 250 - 350 "insalled" at any one time.
Glad that you found the cause and the fix. Though it's written for Photoshop, I have Arpit's first Adobe KB article linked in my Premiere Titler Crashing article, as it works well with that part of Premiere.
Good luck,
