How to extend background color for sidebar

What is the recommended method for extending a sidebar's background color beyond the text so that the color runs the length of the content in the middle column to the footer? Thanks in advance

Contemporary display:table method works great if you know your target audience is tech savvy & using modern, web standards compliant browsers. If target group is indeterminate, there are other options that might be a better fit for your project.
