I've had quite some difficulty getting a record from web cam application working on FMS 4.5 - I've learned the following:
(all of this on a rackspace cloud server)
the webcam application works when I install FMS in developer mode and leave my serial # out
In developer or licensed, the application does not work if I choose to not install Apache
I tried coping main.asc to main.far in VOD and Live when in licensed mode and it doesn't work.
When in developer mode and i install apache, everything works fine with the web cam application
(all of this being done as rtmp:// not http://)
so my questions are:
Can I user my own apache instance? I need php, mysql, etc... on this server
Should I not be running FMS on the same server as my web server? Should they be separate? Is this why FMS defaults to port 80 for apache? That seamed a bit odd to me.
Any help is appreciated.

Before i actually come to the issue you are facing let me try answering your questions
Can I user my own apache instance?
Yes very much. If you want to have HTTP Streaming you would need to copy needed HTTP modules to your Apache server set up and do needed configurations
Should I not be running FMS on the same server as my web server?
There is no requirement as such - you can have your webserver on same machine - provided you make sure that there are no port conflicts.
Is this why FMS defaults to port 80 for apache?
That's not the reason why FMS defaults to 80 for Apache - it defaults because 80 is known port for HTTP.
Now coming to your problem: I am not exactly getting hang of your issue. I am trying to put them down again and can you confirm if my understanding of your issue is right
1. FMS 4.5 installed with bundled Apache with no serial key - WebCam Application is able to publish - right?
2. FMS 4.5 installed with bundled Apache with serial key - WebCam Application is not able to publish - right?
3. FMS 4.5 not installed with bundled Apache with/without serial key - WebCam Application is not able to publish - right?
Can you let me know what edition license you have? Also is your Standalone web-server running on same machine when you are running FMS and if yes what port is it using? Where have you hosted your WebCam Application hosted?
In response to your bulleted points:
1. yes, correct
2. yes, correct
3. yes, correct
We purchsed the latest version as of just a few weeks ago - FMS_4_5_0_r297 - Webserver IS running on same server as FMS - using port 80 - this website as of right now, has no need for HTTPS (maybe in the future)
on a rackspace cloud server:
uname -mrsn = 2.6.18-308.4.1.el5xen x86_64
Just uninstalled and reinstalled FMS
server.admin_hostport = 1111
adaptor.hostport = 1935,88
httpproxy.host = 80
the entire firewall is open for the sake of getting this to work right now
URL:80 returns my website
:1111 returns the xml authentication page (as it should i think)
:88 returns connection reset
same for port 1935
created /opt/adobe/fms/applications/record
chmod -R 775 record
chgrp fms record
chown fms record
is my application
going to it, clicking record and then play produces:
[Server.Reject] : (_defaultRoot_,_defaultVHost_) : Application (record/_definst_) is not a valid signed application; loading access denied.
server was stopped and started after any privledge changes were made
I dont think there is any Apache or no Apache issue here - its pretty simple - you have got "Streaming Editon" license which does not allow "recording" and any non-signed applications. So you can only use signed applications which comes with FMS i.e. "live", "vod" and "livepkgr" - you cannot use "record" application.
http://www.adobe.com/products/flash-media-server-family.html
Nothing on that page says "record" or "webcam"
Thinking over it again - i migth be wrong on the upgrade thing because I am not sure whether there are licenses which allow within release upgrade between edition - meaning i am not sure whether i ever tested such workflow. I am not sales/marketing/support person so please pardon me if i communicated something wrong or pre-commited on wrong promise. But i am writing to someone who can give me right information about such cases and once i hear from him i would get back to you.
Which direct phone number are you seeking - like i said i am not marketing/sales/support guy - so i would have to find out about that too. Can you give me exact geo location of yours - it might help me to pass it right person.
I will await your response before we pull the trigger on any return or upgrade then.
I'm in New York - USA
I've sent the client an email explaining the situation of the different versions. He may choose to purchase the interactive version (he didn't say no right off the bat in otherwords) - this feature means a lot to him. I await his decision.
This is what i got from my Marketing Contact :
"They will need to buy a new license. We stopped offering this with v4.5 and don’t have any plans of offering again since very few customers went this route.
They can only return their license if they purchased within 30 days. If not, then there is nothing that can be done. They need to talk to their reseller about that request. "
I really hope you are within 30 day period so that you can return the same and get Interactive edition.
Ohh - you bought it via Adobe.com - I am not sure whether Adobe.com return refunds - i assumed it was bought through some reseller or some other licensing program. I am not sure whom should i contact with respect to this because my marketing contact does not handle Adobe.com side of business. I will try to find out whom you can reach out - have you checked Adobe site - does it not have any contact number.
Great - Sales guy gave me this link : http://helpx.adobe.com/contact/index.html - he said this would guide you to reach them. And he said please initiate things today itself without much delay.
You are most welcome and we are sorry for any inconvienece which would have been caused due to delayed reply from our end. I hope you would be great customer of FMS and we really value that relationship.
I am leaving for the day - hope your issue gets resolved today - do let me know about the status.
PS: I better rush before my wife denies me a dinner ![]()
Everything worked out fine. Called Sales - got a refund on the software
Went back to Adobe; purchased Interactive software
Installed; created the folder in /applications/ turned on my flash application on my apache server and everything worked fine right out of the box.
Again, thank you, so much for your help.
