create a shape from symbols

Jun 20, 2012 9:29 AM

Alright I am trying to create a shape made up of tons of instances of a symbol (best example of what I am trying to achieve is here )

I hoped I could just use draw inside mode and the symbol sprayer however I am not able to ensure the instances don't colide and that they actually completely fit inside the shape without being cut off.

I am obviously going about this the wrong way but have searched for unsuccessfully for any instruction on how this could be achieved.

Jongware has a script for fitting circles that might serve as a bounding shape for your symbol. But it's based on random distribution and to my knowledge (never tried it) only takes care of position, not orientation/ alignment. so for better or worse, you will have to spend quite a bit of time palcing your shapes manually - with or without the help of scripts.

Yeah, why not do the opposite, fill the shape with as many or more objects as needed, then remove indivual shapes that do not fit. It maybe easier if you create an outline of the outer shape you are after on another layer just so you know what inner shapes that need to be deleted.

This way you can either use symbols or the transform effect and create an array of inner shapes, which you can then expand the appearence on so you can select individual objects.

Some times it is easier to work backwards, it just depends on which way would be more work and go the simplest route as long as it gets the job done.
