PS CS6: stroke color picker preview in real time not working

re: NEW color picker stroke color not updating in real time (previewing).

Is it me or has the stroke color preview been removed in CS6 or is there a setting that needs to be changed to enable it?

The problem: When I create a shape layer, press enter and then chose a stroke color from the color picker, I select a color but it doesnt update the stroke color until I press enter. I'm sure it used to change in real time as you clicked on the color picker panel before accepting it.

Any sugestions or ideas as to whats going on or am I going mad?

Further update: This is when creating a shape but using the new stroke feature in the properties bar at the top (the one which gives you the new fancy options like having a dashed, transparent or gradiented stroke) and not the traditional method of adding it as an effect. This still shows a real time update, but the new method doesnt.

    updates real-time for me...

I'd try quitting PS and trashing prefs, see if that clears it up:

Hold down shift+alt+cntrl (pc) or shift+opt+command (mac) AS you launch PS. You'll get a small dialog to ok resetting preference file.

    I'm on Mac..

You're then moving the colour picker dialogue box to one side so you can see he shape created,

OK. Misread. You are choosing from the Adobe Color Picker (not a preset color from stroke drop-down menu).

Yeah, it would be nice if the Color Picker would live preview, like it does for text.

Doesnt make sense and I'm assuming just overlooked by Adobe rather than technical reason, surely?

That’s difficult to judge – at least from my non-programmer perspective.

But a live preview would naturally improve the user experience.

In any case you could post a Feature Request over at

If you post a Feature Request zarrdave... include Color Picker preview for Shape Fill as well.

If thats working so the color changes in real time for you, then unfortunatley I've got a problem with my version.

Using Win7 CS6 extended, and following your instructions it works for me.

Border changes withn I click on color pallet with color picker.

That's where I got confused too in his first post.

Click the little icon in upper right to launch Color Picker.

What zarrdave is asking for (and I agree) is that Color Picker work like it does when launched from Character Panel - it previews text color change live while in the Color Picker box.

Yes, with the color picker selected you do not have real time results like you do when you just have the color pallet drop down box.

My thought is that when you select the color picker now you have two active windows, the pallet and the color picker fill color.  The OS does not like it when you have two instruction windows open as it does not know what to do.  Not a programmer, but seems like the color pallet should disappear when the color picker appears so it then has priority..

Yes, it's a bug.  It was working near the end of CS6 development, and broke fairly late in the process.

Multiple windows isn't a problem (see things like the layer styles opening gradient editor opening a color picker), but that does make things more complex to preview.
