Can anyone explain how to convert a published Captivate file to a F4V? or FLV?
Depending on the version of Captivate you have, most likely...
In the Publish settings (click File > Publish), select 'Media' on the left side (likely 3rd icon down).
From the resulting options, the first at the top under 'Select Type' choose 'F4V with fixed frame rate (*.f4v)' from the drop-down menu (or can just pick 'F4V video (*.f4v)' but I have better luck with the other one).
Select any other options you need, but that should do it...
Ah, ok then, as Vikram states, you can't do direct F4V with CP 5.5.
But you can do MP4, correct? So you could publish to that...
Then use Adobe Media Encoder (assuming you have the eLearning, or similar, suite) to convert to F4V.
If no Adobe Media Encoder, there are lots of other conversion tools that'll convert MP4 to F4V...websearch!
But also as Vikram suggests, a SWF is not really a 'video' as it retains interactivity. If you publish to a true video format, like MP4 or F4V, you lose any interactivity within your CP piece...
