Do you use 10.7 or do you use 10.6?
In my situation, save as Adobe PDF (Acrobat Pro 9) worked perfectly in 10.6 but gives an Automator error under 10.7.
Automator is an Apple product but what error is generated?
It's a generic error message: "An error occurred while saving the PDF file".
Automator is indeed an Apple product, but this particular Automator script is a product of Adobe.
Therefore it's under responsability of Adobe.
Make sure you are using the latest 9.5.1 (I think).

I started all over again:
I erased my hard disk. I installed Lion (again). I installed Acrobat (again). I did all the 19 updates, one by one (agian).
Now it works. Ouf.
