Illustrator keeps freezing when applying an effect such as texture-grain to a simple gradient, or even rasterizing a simple black circle. My system is about a 6month old macbook pro with 16gb ram, i7 and AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB. What could be causing this? It wasn't like this when i first started using the laptop but has started to do it everytime i try and do any of those simple tasks recently.
Thanks.
Go to Help> Updates, to be sure you have installed the latest updates. If that doesn't help, try to delete your preferences- http://www.illustratorhints.com/2010/05/delete-preferences-file/
There is an update for Illustrator, but it fails everytime i try and install it, i tried to do this update a few weeks ago and it failed then too so i gave up but something must be going wrong, it all gets to 100% then just says it has failed. Also i have tried to find the Library\Preferences\Adobe Illustrator CS# Settings\(localization folder)\ folder but for some reason i don't have a 'Library' folder in my user folder and nothing comes up when i do a search for it, why would i not have this folder? Thanks for replying.
Edit;
Got rid of my preferences file, and it seems to be working with the simple tasks now as far as i can tell. But the update is still failing.
You probably need to repair the application. Use the install disks and select custom install. I believe it will ask you if you want to repair the installation, say yes. When the installer is done, do the update. I have not done this lately and am going by memory, you might want to do a google search before you start, or perhaps somone else has something to add.
If you want to re-install from scratch, you should do an un-install first.
