Extract a number from 11'-11 5/8"

Hi,

I am developing a pdf document and I need to hide/show a note in a text box (txtCeilingHght) depending if the value in another text box (txtCeilingHght) is bigger than 12' or (144"). The string in txtCeilingHght is, for example, 11'-11 5/8".

Could someone give a tip on how to extrat a number from 11'-11 5/8"?
