I converted the background layer to layer 0 so I could turn off the lock. I'm unable to delete the layer. How can I do it? Thank you.

Drag it on to the trash can icon.

Do you have more than one layer?

You need to click on layer 0 to highlight it then drag.

There needs to be more than one layer in your document.

You can't delete a layer if that's the only layer.

    Could you post a screenshot?

Assuming that you have several layers, double click the background layer. Now you have "Layer 0".

Drag Layer 0 to trash can. I just tried this in PSEv.8 and had no problem. Trash can was not grayed out.

Why do you want to delete the layer?

    What is your goal?

You don't need to delete a single layer. Simply close the file or press Ctrl+W

Select them (highlight them) in Organizer and hit the delete button on the keyboard. That will delete the images from the catalog. But they will remain on your hard drive unless you request removal at the same time.
