Need Help Smoothing and Blowing Up

Jun 26, 2012 8:12 AM

I have this picture which was low res when I started working with and it looks horrible when I enlage it. I need to smooth the edges and enlarge it by 5 times it's size. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One can do a lot of things with Photoshop, but not miracles.  If it is a low res photo and enlarging makes it unusable there are few easy ways to fix that.

Frequently it is best to find a better image, or build your own.

I have to agree with Curt Y- i think it may be best to just recreate the image out of vector. this was with vector you wont have to worry about if you need to further enlarge it, or printing clearly.

Curt Y's tutorial is almost spot on for what you want. If you have Illustrator, here is a useful tutorial: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/11/15/illustrator-s-live-trace-sk etch-to-vector/

it might help you get familiar with vector for future projects.

I agree that re-drawing it is the best solution if possible, but if you end up with an image that you really, really need to preserve edges in when upsampling, there are a couple of specialty tools out there for doing just those kinds of operations...

    • Perfect Resize by OnOne Software
    • Blow Up by Alien Skin

A problem with redrawing it is that the dark bars in the original image get progressively thinner as they get closer to the center.  Simply drawing "pie wedges" and twirling them gives a pattern with a rather different appearance.

Think if you put in a black center it would look the same.

Not really, and not even with more twirl.  In the original posted image the dark lines get thinner and the light yellow areas get wider toward the center.

Sure!  You may use it.  I ended up combining the Twirl filter with the "hurricane" effect in Liquify.

I now realize I don't have as many lines in my version as you did.

    Here's a big version.
