CS6: Dictionary defaults to English USA, can't change!

The dictionary in the Character Palette always defaults to English USA in CS6. I have changed the setting Preferences > Dictionary and Hyphenation to English UK, but the Character Palette doesn't change, even though the setting remains changed in Prefs. I have opened each of the New Document Profiles in ..\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS6 Settings\en_US\x64\New Document Profiles (Windows 7) and changed the language in the Character Palette to English UK, and it STILL goes back to English USA!

    The language in the Character Palette is the Character-wide property , it is not a Document-wide property.

     

    Select some text in the file and then change the language in the Character palette , you will see the document will still show the language as "English US" however on selecting the same text again it will switch to the "English UK" .

     

    If you want to change the language of the complete document , select all the text and then change the language in the Character palette.

     

    The language shown in the Character Palette is the Spell-check language.

    Yes it is the spell-check language I want to change, and I want it to be English UK from the moment I start typing text in a new document. Having to change this every time I start typing in a new document as you suggest is very annoying. Are you saying the default language can't be changed in CS6 as it could be in CS5 and before? That would not be a feature but most definely a bug!

    The character palette will pick the language defined in the Character style , so If you want to change the Character pallete language for all the new document.

     

    Follow this steps :-

     

    1. Choose File > Open and go to User/<user name>AppData/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS6 Settings/New Document Profiles (Windows) or to Users/User/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS6/New Document Profiles (Mac OS).

       

    2. Open one of the default document profile template files (Basic CMYK, Basic RGB, Mobile and Devices, Print, Video and Film, or Web, depending on which type of document you intend to use).

       

    3. Choose Window > Type > Character Styles.

       

    4. Select the Normal Character Style and choose Advanced Character Formats Options from the palette menu.

       

    5. Set the language here as the English UK and save the file

    6. When you will create the file based on the same profile then the language by default would be @English UK

    Thanks, didn't realise I had to go into the Character Styles palette. I can't help thinking this could be made easier from a user perspective. When the user selects a language in Preferences I think it's reasonable to expect that it would become the default language thereafter. Right now I'm not sure what the purpose of that preference is.

    There is a difference in the Hyphenation and spell check , Illustrator Preferences define language for the Hyphenation however Character pallete is spell check language.

    OK thanks, I understand the distinction now. It would still be useful if there was an easier way.
